February Vt. 1942 9 '42 Salem Dog Show Opees alt Armory nn i ooay 47 Breeds Listed; Soldiers Invited to Attend, Tree; Illinois Judge Presides The fourth annual Salem Lions Kennel club dog show, whose 1941 predecessor drew an estimated 3000 spectators, will open at the armory here at 1 o'clock this afternoon with an entry list closely ..approaching 200 and '- Tire rationing and other war conditions have resulted in a slight decrease in entries, but dog fan ' fieri are assured of very nearly the usual number of breeds and the past quality of animals, J. H. "Harry' Wiilett, general chair man, declared Friday night. The Kennel club this year is bringing on his first official trip to the Pacific northwest Alf Mit chell of Deerfield, HI., old-time all-breed Judge who has presided at a majority of the large shows in the eastern states during his 30 years of experience. The Salem show is Deerfield's only engage ment in the west this year. He is a breeder as well as a Judge of fine dogs. Successful exhibitors will carry way with them Sunday night, in addition to 13 types of club rib bons, a wide variety of sun-gold, bronze and pewter trophies whose aggregate value is reported to be S350. Special arrangements were completed Friday by Edward Majek, publicity chairman, and Wiilett, for the admission of all service men In uniform free of charge daring the t w o - d a y bow. The soldiers may be especial ly interested to find an excep tionally large exhibit of Dober man Pinschers, a breed of dog fre quently used in military service. Cocker Spaniels constitute the breed represented by the greatest number of entries, with Boston Terriers running second. One of the latter, a puppy from Seattle, was on exhibition in Hawaii at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Special event for this year's show Is the children's handling class, to be conducted at 6:30 p. m. Snnday with E. T. B. Hill f Salem as the Judge. Entrants are to be 12 years of age or younger. They are required to obtain one of the dogs entered In the show with which to dem onstrate their handling ability. Three trophies will be awarded: For best boy handler, best girl handler and champion handler. The committee requires that all dogs be submitted to ex amination by a veterinarian be- classifications for 47 breeds. Judging Program Salem Lions Kennel club dog show, armory, today and Sun day. TODAY: 2-5 p.m. All toys, group V, such as Chihuahuas, Griffons, Pekin gese, Pomeranians, and hounds, group II, such as Afgans, Bas sets, Beagles, Bloodhounds, Bor zois and Dachshunde. 7:30-11 p.m. Collies, Group III, and all terriers, Group IV. SUNDAY: 10:30 a.m.-12 noon All non sporting Group IV except Bos ton terriers, and remainder of working dogs, group III, such as Shepherds, Great Danes, Shet lands jind St. Bernards. 1-5:30 p.m. Boston terriers and all sporting dogs, group I, such as Pointers, Retrievers, Setters, and Spaniels. 6:30-9 p.m. Children's handling classes. Variety classes. Parade of champions, best brace and best dog in show. fore benching. No dog is permit ted to be permanently removed from the show before the judging is completed Sunday night, with out special permission. .Puppies born after August 27, 1941, are not eligible to be shown. "Best dog in show" selection is determined by an elimination rou tine in which winning animals of each breed are chosen for entry in the variety class groups and group winners judged for the grand award. Ribbon colors represent awards as follows: Blue first prize. Red Second prize. Yellow Third prize. Royal purple Winners. Royal purple and white Re serve winners. Blue and white Best of win ners. Wiilett, president, expert dog fancier and breeder who serves on benching committees of other major Pacific northwest shows; Jack Putnam, vice president, and H. W. Scott, secretary-treasurer. Members of the bench show committee are Putnam, Jacob Fuhrer, Edward Majek, Denver Young, Tracy Porter, Monroe S, Cheek, R. W, "Joe" Land, L. S. Christison and Jack Hubbard. Acclaimed as fine as any seen in western dog shows is the ben ching made and owned by the Sa lem Lions club members. A pro ject for construction of wooden, demountable benching was under taken two years ago. The club now owns sufficient benching for 325 dogs and values the equip ment at $2000. Proceeds of the lions dog shows go into its charity fund for tha, aid of the blind through out tneear and of nnderpriv lleged children at Christmas time.
