Farmers Union News BETHEL There was a large ! attendance of members and friends at the school Saturday when the Farmers' Union put on a social night as a part of a na tional movement cf the organiza tion. Super was served under the chairmanship of Mrs. J. G. Lau-derbackand-her committee, Mrs, Cass A Nichols, Kirs. A. C. Spranger, and their assistants. La ter games were in play. The af fair was a financial success with 'the proceeds to be devoted -to the work of the organization. MARION The ladies auxil iary met Wednesday with 17 pres ent and quilted during the day. A decorated birthday cake, baked by Mrs. Elzy Pickard and honoring the birthdays of Mrs, Charles Sarver and Mrs Jim Wil ton, centered the luncheon table. Mrs. Fred Schermacher was in structed to purchase a number of stamped pillow cases. Mrs. George McCay gave an account of her re cent trip to Crookston, Neb., to isit her 95-year-old mother. She i also visited relatives at Basin, Wise, and her two sons at Sunny side, Wash. , .Mrs. - Charles Sarver, leader of the Red Cross work, announced they would meet Wednesday in the club rooms. LIBERTY The winner of the Marion county Farmers Union junior group in the state educa tiohal contest will be decided at a meeting tonight at the Liberty community hall. The Winner will represent the county at the annual state con vention to be held at McMinnville next week. All Farmer Union members and friends are urged to show their appreciation and interest in the work of the young people by at tending. Matt Thompson, superintendent of the Monmouth high school, lead a discussion on "Education of free men in an American democracy" The next meeting will be.March 14, at the Dallas high school. Attending from the local school were Frances Schmidt, Koneta Nowowiejski, Ira Duelgten, Leigh ton Dashiel andRalph Nelson. Mrs. John Doran accompanied the group. Theodore Burns presided as master of the grange in the ab sense of the master and the over seer at the last meeting. Arthur Brown presented sashes to the of ficers. Plans were made to postpone the monthly social night to Feb. 28. The social will be in the form of a dance at the city hall with the following committee in charge Ed England, Theodore Burns and A. Courtmier. The lecturer's program feat ured a quiz on Washington and Lincoln. Joseph Underwood, Salem and Kenneth Aston, Salem, were each fined $5 in police court for vio lation of the basic rule. E. H. May, Salem, was fined $8.85 in justice court for driving truck without a property per mit from the P. U. C. Harold Bre naman, Salem, paid a fine of $13. 85 for driving on the highway while intoxicated. C. R. Kline was issued a build ing permit to erect a dwelling at 650 Rosemont avenue at a cost of $2000. John S. Brown is employed at a shipyard in Portland. Mrs. Mabel Hathaway is assisting Mrs. Brown in the variety store. Mrs. Fay Winchester and Mrs. A. Wecher have returned from a visit with their son at Alameda Calif. Family Moves to Rickreall Farm WEST SALEM Mr. and Mrs George Esau sold their home on Piedmont street to Mr. and Mrs, Harvey Guenther. The Esau fam ily is moving to their farm near Rickreall. Frances Schmidt, local fifth grade teacher, who has been living at the Esau home, moved Monday to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Jensen. Mr. and Mrs. Leland Wood, Mr and Mrs. Paul Phelps and daugh ter, all of Portland, Vera De Shane and Granville Allen, Am ity, were visitors at the Ivan Wood home Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. FJma J. Wilson announced the arrival of a son Daniel James. City officials are requesting ev eryone in the city to register for civilian defense. The list of men has been greatly depleted by go ing into the army. Word was re ceived from civilian defense head quarters that all people should be registered. Registration papers may be secured at the city hall, Central Howell Man Home Again CENTRAL HOWELL Alfon so Nafziger, who was injured in a fall from his silo, is recovering at home after an eight days stay in a hospital. .. Mrs. A. E. Janz is in charge of listing women for defense in this community. West Stayton News WEST STAYTON Mr. J. Martin, Monroe, is visiting at the home of Mr and Mrs, Harry Stewart Martin and Mrs. Stewart are brother and sister. Verne Chamberlin lost a valu able cow from milk fever last week. - A large crowd attended the community club Friday and saw slides taken in England and at Pearl Harbor. Mr. Gilson from the fire marshall's office showed the slides and Mr. Hays gave a talk. Seymour Stewart, spent the weekend here visiting his family. Stewart is working . at . Mrs. Bert Hamilton announced the following program: recita tion, Jane Hamilton; duet, Shir ley Evans and Grace Ann Sparks; accordion solo, Paul Frederick- son; vibraharp solo, Mrs. Oscar Brown, and skit, "Why They Stay Home," Clara Sparks, Mrs. H. Evans and Mrs. B. Hamilton; recitation, Carol Hamilton, and piano solo, Mrs. Forrest Cam mack. Food was sold for the benefit of the hot lunch fund. SPRING . VALLEY The pro gram presented at the Spring Valley community club Friday included a group of songs with guitar accompaniment by a girls' trio from Hopewell, word picture of Grand Coulee dam by Glen Bidgood, who formerly resided near there, a blackout broadcast by blackface comedians, Russel Hills and Howard Teeple and group of mandolin numbers by Phyllis Bielke. Faculty Group Entertained WEST SALEM Mr. and Mrs. A. Guderian were hosts to members of the local school fac ulty and their families at a party Saturday. Musical numbers were present ed by Robert Guderian, violinist; Phyllis Guderian, Fra nces Schmidt and Leighton Dashiell, pianists, and Ira Dueltgen, vocal ist. Present were Mrs. B. F. Wiens, Mrs. Ethel McCoy, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Dueltgen, Mr. and Mrs. Leigt- ton Dashiell, Frances Schmidt, Koneta Nowowiejski, Mrs. Vida Miller, Pearl Groves, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Guderian, Phyllis, Glenn and Robert Guderian. The beginners' first aid class will meet at the school gymna sium for the sixth session Thurs day at 7:30 o'clock. Dr. A. F. Gof- frier is the instructor and is as sisted by Claud Boyd. William La Due, Albany, was a caller in this city Saturday. Mrs. La Due is still seriously ill at a Salem hospital. Plays Slated At Oak Grove OAK GROVE Three one-act plays "A Bachelor's Baby," Or ville's Big Date," and "Sewing Circle Minstrels" will be present ed at the Oak Grove grange hall Friday night at 8 p.m. Mrs. Standley is directing the plays. The money raised will be used to buy a circulator for the Oak Grove church, of which Ev erett Lisle is pastor. There will be a popcorn sale in connection. The program will be given at Eola on March 6. Draft Figures At Silverton Are Reported SILVERTON Mrs. George Jaeschke, chief registrar of Sil verton's special draft, reported 437 registrations Monday at the close of the three-day job. On Satur day 184 registered, Sunday there were 129 and on Monday, the of ficial registration day, 124. Defense Speaker On Program at Meet Tonight MISSION BOTTOM The P. T, A. meeting will be held at the school house at 8. p. m. Feb. 20 On the program will be a speak er on defense, Clear Lake will furnish, a skit and Lena Belle Tartar of Salem high school, will furnish several musical numbers and lead in community sing. After the. program there will be a pie social with proceeds to be divided between the P. T. A. and Red Cross books. A program of popular music was presented by Edwin, Tandy and Vivian Burton and Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Moriarity. Colored moving pictures taken by Frank Crawford were shown. Clifford Smith, the new presi dent, conducted the business meeting. Heiresnments were served by Doreen Smith, chair man, and a group of school girls. McCannel and John ' Small furnished music for danc ing. Serving on the supper com mittee were Dr. A. J. McCannel and Max Scriber. Mrs. R. M. Mor ton served as chairman of the program committee. CENTRAL HOWELL The school furnished the program for the community club program Fri day. The club will start practice on a play this week. Mrs. Larry Carpenter is director and the cast includes Mrs. Loren Gower, Shir ley Kaufman, Beulah Lichty, Lu cille Roth, Mrs. Clarence Johnson, Clarence Simmons, jr., Leonard Roth and John Lauderback. The patriotic program also in eluded orchestra numbers, a skit in which Mrs. O. L. Dencer. Mrs. E. G. Clark, Mrs. Grant Teter, Hulda Beckley and Barbara Bates took part; flag pantomime and reading by Rev. Raynor Smith. Robert Rieder, county agent, showed moving pictures and Ro berta Wilson's pupils staged a flag drill. Card Party Set By Aurora Group AURORA The Pythian Sis ters of Aurora are sponsoring a five hundred card party February 25, which will be held in the Knights of Pythias hall. Walter Gustafson is reported very ill at Portland. He Is the husband of the former Minnie Strand, Silverton. Clarissa Brager is reported critically ill at her home here.
