S. navy planes and warships suddenly staged a surprise attack on the Japanese-held Marshall and Gilbert islands in the mid-Pacific, sinking or damaging many enemy auxiliary ships and battering shore in stallations. Many enemy planes were destroyed on the ground, according to the communique. The Marshall islands, Japan's easternmost possessions, lie 630 miles southeast of Wake island, U. S. Posses sion which fell to the Japanese after weeks of resistance, and approximately 2,000 miles from the Ha waiian islands. The Marshalls were taken by Japan under League of Nations mandate after the first . World war. The navy communique announced that 11 American aircraft failed to return from the at tack. Also shown on the map Is the Dutch East Indies Island of Amboina, site of an important Dutch naval base, where Japanese forces have landed.
