Marion Survey Shows Peach Trees Hurt MARION The peach orchards on the William Philips and Arden Hammer farms, located in the rich Santiam river bottom, were damaged by limbs breaking af ter the storm last week. To what extent this will cut the crop is not yet apparent It is reported that the large walnut trees on the Art Page place were badly damaged. Page is the largest and oldest nut grower in this part of the county. Some of his trees were old and carried a wide spread of limbs, which made them more suscepti ble to breakage under the heavy load of ice. Loss to field crops cannot be accurately estimated until after a complete maw and bulged soil is settled. Dairymen carrying large herds have suffered most as hand milk ing had to be done, with most dairymen working short handed even with the aid of milking ma chines. However, optimistic people be lieve the freezing will extermi nate many insects which have caused damage to crops the past years. Seed Surplus Is Desired CORVALLIS, Jan. IS -jP)- Oregon growers need have no fear of overproduction of winter cover crop seed even though the 40- par cent expanded acreage should give a bumper yield, the Oregon Seed Growers league was told Thursday. E. L. Deal, southern division AAA official here from Washing ton, DC, for the growers meet ing, said the government is eager to build up a stock pile for early planting the following year and would welcome an overproduc tion. The use of more legume cover crops in the south has an impor tant war-time connection. Deal said, since it releases commer cial nitrogen fertilizer to other uses. The ultimate goal in the south is 13,000,000 acres which, he pointed out, would mean fur ther expansion in Oregon to meet the seed demand. Produce Mart Prices PORTLAND, Jan. lM-An increased supply of brussels sprouts was offered on the East Side Farmers wholesale market Friday with sales around S1.25 box, a few to $1.30-35. Quality was very good. Parsnips were in good demand despite a good supply at 85-90 cents lug. A few sold for $L Cabbage offerings were fairly liberal and sales generally $1.90 2.00 crate although a few selected green lots were $X25-50 crate. Curly cabbage was around 40-50 cents pony crate and red sorts to $1 pony crate. Chinese lettuce was offered around $1.25 crate. Garlic was priced at 10 cents pound for strings. Kale was abundafrt and brought 45-60 cents crate. Rutabagas sold generally for 75 cents lug, carrots 75-90 cents and turnips mostly CS cents. No. 2 potatoes brought 95 cents to $1 for 50-pound sacks. The best grade was mostly absent Squash sold at 14-2 cents pound for Hubbard and Marble head and 75-90 cents pony crate for Danish. FALRDALE, Fi.VF-lt was so cold in this northeastern Pennsyl vania town the other day that Earl Jones tad to blow on my ther mometer to get the inereury high enough to see It was 33 degrees below zero." - Hop Mart Dull; Shortage of Wire and Burlap Hop markets on the west coast were seasonally dull and in active but remained about steady during the week ended January 14, according to the department of agrkturewl Remaining supplies of 1941' hops in strictly growers hands are reported to be small In pro ducing areas of the three west coast states and offerings have been light during recent weeks. The only moderate demand is generally attributed to the usual seasonal dullness although this has been increased to some extent by the large purchases made by domestic dealers and Industries earlier m the season. Most domestic buyers were ap parently awaiting further market developments before adding to these stocks while export trade continued restricted by war con ditions. Oregon hop markets were dull and featureless with very light trading during the past seven days. Demand was fair for 1941 crop regular seeded types but light offerings from growers re stricted transactions to small scat tered lots. Valaes aa 1941 crap seeded hops as Indicated by the light trading were placed at araand 35 cents per pawnd to grawersr In the absence ef aetaal traas actlans, valaes en 1941 erap seedless haps were only aasni naL - - i While accurate figures are not available, trade estimates place the supplies of 1941 crop hops re maining In strictly growers' hands at around only 1500 bales, an un usually small figure for this sea son of the year. Only a few small contracts cov ering 1942 crop seeded type hops were reported made during the period in this state, at 34 cents per pound to growers. Values on 1942 seedless hops were placed at about 40 cents per pound to growers. Oregon hop growers have not been inclined to enter into addi tional contracts on their 1942 crop hops during the past few weeks because of the uncertainty regard ing production costs and the possi bility of some difficulty in obtain ing necessary supplies of wire and burlap. Washington hop markets were dull with demand and trading limited. No spot sales were re ported and no new contracts writ ten during the past seven days, although some offerings and offers in each have been made. Spot supplies were offering at somewhat lower values but con' tract prices held at about previous levels. Dealer were bidding 35 cents to 38 'cents for prime quality 1941 hops with growers generally asking 39 to 40 cents per pound for this type. Dealers were offering 34-35 cents per pound for 1942 crop re gular seeded hops, and 40 to 42 cents per pound for seedless types from the 1942 crop. Growers were not inclined to contract 1942 sup plies due to the uncertainty re garding production costs. On Commission " I ' 'fi V! No sales of spot hops were reported in the prin ciple producing areas but prices were quoted I about unchanged compared with a week ago at around the highs for the current season. , The market in 1941 regular seeded hops was placed at 35-38 cents depending on quality and 1941 seedless nominally at 50 cents per pound. California growers now hold less than 1000 bales of 1941 crop hops and were not pressing remaining supplies for sale. Some further" interest was shown in 1942; and 1943 hops for future delivery. Sonoma county growers reported contracts cover ing 150 hales of 1942 regular seed ed hops at 34 cents and 150 bales of the same quality from the 1943 Screen Actress If Xf" y m f""Ylt If A J Screen Actress Marlon Davtes is shown tn Los Angeles as she turned over the keys of the hospital building of the Marion Davies Founda-' tksa in southern California to Major Frank G. At the dose of the week grow ers reported additional bids of 34 cents for 1942 regular seeded hops but were mostly holding foi 33 cents and higher. Unusually large! contracts have been writ ten for future delivery this sea son and growers generally were not inclined to make additional large commitments pending more certain production costs. Around 40 cents per pound was being bid for 1942 seedless net Sacramento valley growers but no additional deals were reported. The New York hop markets continued quiet with prices steady. Trading was slow with brewers mostly filling their needs from previous purchases. Foreign hops were dull and nominal. On Jan uary 4, regular 1941 Pacific coast bops were quoted to the trade at New York at 4Z-49 cents; seed less at 58-50 cents; 1940 regulars at 38-40 cents and seedless at 48 to 50 . cents per pound.
