December 13, 1941 1 i n Hop Buyers and Sellers Await Developments; Exports Hit by Unsettled Shipping Condition The hop market situation on the Pacific coast was steady to firm during the. week ended December 10, the department of ag riculture reports. While the general situation was somewhat un settled following the war developments during the period, de mand from domestic dealers and "Strictly Private By Quinh Hall 3 industries was sufficient to ab sorb the moderate to light offer- ires from growers readily at steady prices. There appeared some tendency, on the part of both buyers and sellers to await further develop ments before entering into fur ther commitments. Many domes tic consumers were obtaining cur rent needs from stocks accumu lated earlier in the season, and export movement was being af fected by unsettled shipping con ditions brought about by the war. pt Interest to the entire in dustry was an announcement by the hop central board at Salem Wednesday that the sec retary of agriculture had sign ed an order on Tuesday, De Target Practice Now Part of Activities SILVERTON First aid classes and target practice have been added to the activities of the Sons of Legion, headed by Captain Vayle Dickerson. Target practices will be held the" third Thursday night of each month with the regular order of business scheduled for the first Thursday night. O. W. Olson is in charge of the practice shoot ing. A committee from the Legion post will furnish refreshments each night following the target practice. Corn Borer Rule Revised Here The Oregon corn borer quaran tine, in effect since 1937, has been revised to permit entrance into the state of quarantined ar ticles provided they are accom panied by a certificate from the state of origin showing treatment under- .proper supervision, the state agricultural department was advised Friday, The new order, effective De cember 15, also continues accept ance of certification by the fed eral bureau of entomology and plant quarantine. Certain garden products of 20 eastern and midwestern states are affected. by the modified quarantine. Scene of REA Meet Changed Originally scheduled for Thurs day at Mill City, the meeting of farmers in that district interest ed in signing up with rural elec trification cooperative has been changed to Lyons grange hall at 8 p. m. Similar meetings are to be held eember 9, allowing all hops harvested under the marketing agreement and in the bands of growers to be sold without re striction to a percentage of sal able quantity. Growers are ex pected to receive certificates allowing them a 100 per cent allotment. Oregon markets continued to display a fully steady to firm tone and values on both spot supplies and contracts for future deliver ies held at around the same levels as those of the previous week. A firm to strong undertone was re ported in the hop market in this state. Trading was on only moderate volume during the week but deal ers were in the market rather actively on all days during the period. This was especially true following the reported signing of the above mentioned order by the secretary of agriculture. Sales by Oregon growers during the past seven days In dicated the market on 1941 regular seeded hops as around 40c per pound net growers. For seedless hops from the 1941 crop, values were indicated at around 46c per pound net to growers. An active inquiry was reported from dealers for 1942 crop hops on contract. Trade reports indicated contracts were written during the past week at 35c per pound for seeded hops from the 1942 crop in Oregon. Contracts in the Grants Pass district for this quality were re ported as having reached 36c per pound net to growers. Contracts covering seedless hops from the 1942 crop were reported at 42c per pound to growers. Growers however, were not pressing 1942 hops for sale at these prices, and the volume of transactions was reported as only moderate and somewhat less than during the previous week Trading slackened considerably in California hop markets follow ing the outbreak of the war be tween the United States and Ja pan and with both dealers and growers generally inclined to wait for further developments, before making additional com mitments. Light offerings, however, tend ed to offset the slower demand and prices were quoted nominal ly unchanged around the high points for the season. Early in the week around 200 bales of 1941 regular seeded hops were sold at 34c-35c per pound net coastal county growers. Transactions, however, were reported as involving hops of lower qualities and the market on choice 1941 regular seeded hops was still placed around 38c per pound, seedless hops were nominally quoted at 50c per pound with supplies almost negli gible. Produce in Demand With Supply Scare PORTLAND, Dec. 12-()-Pro-duce was in very keen demand on the East Side Fanners' Whole sale market Friday, with cauli flower particularly scarce at $1.00-10 crate. Spinach held to $1.25 for the Grain Market Rise Checked CHICAGO, Dec 12 -tfV The war-inspired rise of grain prices was, checked Friday by profit taking that lowered wheat as much as a cent a bushel from four-year peaks. Traders said profit taking and professional selling in grains was inspired partly by reports of in creased sale of wheat in some localities by producers who were taking advantage of profits over loan rates to acquire Christmas cash. The fact that wheat had risen 8 to 9 cents since the start of fighting, with corn and rye up 4 to 8 cents and oats about S cents, attracted profit takers. Late buyinf attributed partly to mills and processors rallied wheat, corn and oats. Wheat closed un changed to lower than Thurs day, December $1.26, May $1.29-. Wheat had some support from mills, with large eastern chain bakers inquiring for 500,000 bar rels of flour and the army an nouncing purcahse of 1,000,000 pounds from a Minneapolis concern. best with some offerings around 80-95 cents orange box. A few went at $1. Brussels sprouts sold at 90-95 cents box generally although a few were $1. Parsnips and rutabagas were generally 45-50 cents lug with very good demand and supplies quite fair.
