December 7, 1941 County Herd Given Honors Miller Estate Jerseys Placed in Class 'Good Plus' "Constructive Breeders Regis try" honors go to two more Ore gon Jersey establishments for the commendable breeding accomp lishments over a period of years. The herds owned by Mrs. Flor ence E. Gale Neal, Oregon City, and the estate of Sidney Miller, Woodburn, are the most recent winners of the meritorious award made by the American Jersey Cattle club. The national organi sation reports that in both in stances there has been a 30-year program of pure Jersey breeding. Mrs. Neal's herd has been on production test for five years through the herd improvement registry system of the club. The last test was made with an entry of 21 cows, one-third of which were first-calf heifers, averaging 418.58 pounds of butterfat, 7091 pounds of milk per cow. "The present herd has been classified with an average score of "rood plus." The one-time world champion Jersey pro ducer, Tiddledywink's Quality Girl, has brought much recogni tion to the Neal herd. Herd testing in the Miller herd has likewise been carried on for five years, though the fifth record Js not yet completed. The four year average per cow is 504.30 pounds of butterfat, 8151 pounds of milk on twice-daily milking The last test record was made with an entry of 40 cows and an average of 20 cows in milk daily. Aoout one-nair or these were first-calf heifers and the record was 519.67 pounds of butterfat, 8455 pounds of milk per cow. Nine had "star" ratings for their ex ceptional yields, the highest be ing 731.76 pounds butterfat, 12, 089 pounds milk in 309 days. This record was made by the mature cow, Silver Lad's Frances. The. present herd of 27 cows, all bred In the herd, has been classified with a "good plus" average. Two cows had ratings of "excellent." Both herds have been federal accredited free from tuberculosis for a period of 20 years and are free from Bang's disease. Neal W. Miller Is engagedin the direction of work with the long-established herd founded by tne late Sidney Miller. Of High Food Value If peanut munchers would be tidier in disposing of the shells, city fathers and park managers might be more -liberal in permit ting sale of hot roasted peanuts. People like to sniff the aroma of the peanut vender's cart, but many cities and amusement places have prohibited selling peanuts In this way because of the litter. The US department of Agricul ture gives this as one cause of the sharp decline in sales of unshelled peanuts less than 10 per cent of the crop. Another reason is a shift in public taste to salted pea nuts and other salted nuts part ly, no doubt, because they wo not involve the job of removing the shells. Peanuts and peanut products contain a large proportion of both fat and protein pf good quality. and they also supply vitamin Bl and several important minerals. Peanut butter sandwiches com bine the protein of wheat with that of peanuts to make a "com plete" protein of high food value. Housewives can use whole and chopped peanuts in most recipes calling for other nuts, and they can replace part of the fat In other recipes by peanut butter. Crop reports indicate that supplies are ample for a shift back to more un shelled peanuts for home use. Grain Market Futures Drop CHICAGO, Dec. B--Soybean prices tumbled as much as 4 cents a bushel at one time Saturday, and grain futures reacted largely in sympathy with the break in beans, losing fractions to a cent a bushel. Grain futures quotations were lower despite the fact that at the cash grain tables near the trading pits brokers were quoting actual wheat and oats at four-year peak prices. A car of No. 1 red wheat sold at $110, 5 cents -over the gov ernment loan rate. Top grades ef white oats were quoted up to 53. Although rallying slightly from the low point due to late short covering, soybeans closed 2S-34 cents lower than Friday, with De cember at $1.65, almost 5 ments higher than a week ago. Wheat finished -l cent lower, Decem ber $1.17, May 2Vt-l21. III A HURRY There Is n personal or business emerreney which we cannot help yon meet with a conveniently, speedily arranged loan!
