Markets ancial Farm PAGE EIGHT The OREGON STATESMAN. Salem. Oregon. Saturday Morning. November 22. 1941 i 1 Stock Market Gains Slight Rails Lead Session; Low Priced Issues Swell Volume NEW YORK, Nov. 21-(P)-The stock market came back from its Thanksgiving Friday and, while its digestive mechanism seemed a bit lossy at times, it revived in the final hour to post gains of fractions to a point or so for fav orites. Rails were in front throughout, apparently reflecting a contra seasonal increase in last week's freight loadings and growing be lief the carrier wage dispute was due for quick settlement. Although many leaders refused to do much in the way of extend ing Wednesday's recovery shift and minus signs were plentiful at the last, The Associated Press av erage of 60 stocks ended with a net advance of JZ of a point at 40. Large blocks of low-priced is sues, apparently liquidated for tax purposes, helped lift the volume to 853,840 shares compared with 800,960 in the preceding session. Southern Railway Preferred pushed up to a new year's top. Others ahead included Santa Fe, Union Pacific, Chesapeake & Ohio, Atlantic Coast Line, Union Carbide, Allied Chemical, East man Kodak, Douglas Aircraft, United Aircraft, American Air lines, Chrysler, Goodrich, US Rubber Preferred, Montgomery Ward, International Harvester and General Electric. Uncertainty over price legisla tion, war developments and Am erican ana Japanese talks in Washington kept grain traders on the sidelines much of the time, without any major developments over the holiday to stimulate business. All cereals showed small gains or losses at times. Wheat closed lower to Vi higher com pared with Wednesday, Decem ber $1.14-'4, May $1.19-. urain men saia tne most sig nificant development over the holiday was the sale of 2,000,000 bushels of Canadian wheat to the United Kingdom.
