Church, Cantonment Relation
Discussed at Monmouth Session
' MONMOUTH The chamber of commerce meeting Thurs
day was attended by 20 members. After a dinner at the Mon
mouth hotel Rev. W. A. Elkins talked on the relation of the
churches to the cantonment, if and when it comes. As a retired
army chaplain, Rev. Elkins has
some Interesting views on the sit
uation. His personal conviction is
that the cantonment Is coming.
' Soldier boys suffer, from home
sickness, he averred, and the local
churches intend to so organize
that the boys may be welcomed
net only into the church but into
the homes. There is a real chance
for ministers and churches to be
of service to them as well as the
service' they receive from army
chaplains.
Mr. Wright, a representative of
the Louise Home in Portland,
spoke on the home which was
founded more than SO years ago
and has handled 1325 cases since
then. The home is in need of ex
pansion and he desires to in
terest a committee of welfare
minded folk in each community
to assist with this project

movie theater is expected to re
open within two weeks. It has
been closed since last spring. Ross

west, should the cantonment come,
the consensus was that the high
way would not be deflected from

It was disclosed that a large
quantity of scrap aluminum had
been contributed here, some of
which has been sold. At present
about 200 pounds, hammered flat,
is stored in the basement of Mor
lan's store awaiting disposal.
F. J. Hill and Lowell Morgan
were ' appointed a . committee to
inquire about a proposed merchant-farmer
banquet said to be
scheduled for occurrence at Dal
las later in the year,
J. L. Norris was appointed to
the chamber's entertainment com
mittee, replacing Tony Moravec,
who has moved away.
Entertainment numbers presen
ted included two clarinet solos by
Roy Anderson, band leader of In
dependence, accompanied by Vir
ginia Makoff, Independence.
The Rev. David Beck, minister
of the local Baptist church, spoke
briefly.

in August. She also served as
musician of the grand session for
her 24th consecutive year. . :
