MAXINE BUR-JJN Editor Vi Mrs.; Goetz Speaks to " Teachers A large group of members of the Salem branch Oregon State Music Teachers association met for luncheon Wednesday noon at the Argo hotel. Miss Dorothy Pearce, president of this district, presided at the business meeting following the luncheon and in troduced the guest speaker, Mrs. Gertrude Goetz of Portland. '. Mrs. Goetz, state chairman for membership in the OMTA out lined many interesting facts In the extension work and drive for membership throughout the state. She- told of the growth of the' Music Teachers associa tion in the past ten years and explained the steps to be taken by music teachers in order to become state accredited. Miss Frances Virginie Melton, state president of the Music Teachers association announced the slogan for the year: "Every accredited or qualified music teacher of the state of. Oregon a member of the Oregon Music Teachers association." Mrs. Mable Powers reported for the committee for the Iva F. Turner memorial contest which is held each year. The date for this year will be June 5, 1942, and all applications must be in the hands of the committee by May 30th. Piano and violin students of the ninth and tenth grades only will compete. Pian ists will prepare the complete Haydn Sonata in D, and violin ists the "Arioso" by Bach-Franco. Only students who are study ing privately with a teacher who Is a member of the state associa tion are eligible to compete. Special guests at the luncheon were Mrs, Gtertrude Goetz of Portland and : Mrs. Frank Bur lingame of Woodburn. Parties Honor Miss Clifford Miss Enid Clifford, bride-elect of Mr. Donald Moore Fisher, is the incentive for much entertain ing prior to her marriage on Fri day at Westminster Presbyterian church in Portland. Salem will be the new home of the couple. On Monday Mrs. Walter ' H. Griesinger entertained with a tea at her home in Laurelhurst in compliment to the bride-elect and on Tuesday Mrs. Samuel K. Fish er, jr, honored her prospective sister-in-lajji with a luncheon at. the Campbell Court hotel. That evening Mrs. - Malcolm Colgan had a party at her home and last Friday Mrs. William ' Feigenson had an evening bridge gathering, both affairs honoring Miss Clifford. ' The wedding rehearsal will be held Thursday night ' ' l Told Sunday ' Mr. and Mrsr John Van Lyde graf announced the engagement of their daughter, Willo, to Mr. . Otha Lawson, son . of Rev. and Mrs. J. F. Lawson. : ; The news was told Sunday at : a dinner given at the home of the bride-elect's parents. Place cards revealed the news to members of both families and x dose friends. No date .has yet been set for the wedding. Skating Club Makes Plans The Salem Skating club met Tuesday night in the fireplace room of the public library for the regular business meeting. Miss Loyal Sheridan, vice presi dent, presided in the absence of President Bill Swigart, Miss Ethel Craven was elected treas urer to take the place of Mrs. Roy Pease, who resigned. A new program was approved by the club, which will include skating on Monday or Wednes day of the third week in each month. The remainder of f the club's major activities will con tinue on Tuesday night, which has been the regular meeting ; night since the group organized in 1938. The plans also include a regular out-of-town trip to be made the first Tuesday of each month. : Plans were discussed for a Halloween- party to be held at the Mellow Moon rink on Fri day, October 31. Au Revoir Party For Mrs. Davis Mrs. Luke Shields presided at a 1 o'clock luncheon Wednesday afternoon at her home on West Myers street in compliment to Mrs! Ward Davis, who with her daughter, Linda, is leaving next week for San Francisco. Lamport was elected to the presidency of the Salem Community concert asso ciation at a meeting held at the Spa on Wednesday. He succeeds Mr. J. Lyman Steed, who died while still president of the or ganization. Other officers include Mr. John Heltzel, first vice president; Mrs. ; Winnie Pettyjohn, second yice president: Mrs. Max Rogers, sec retary; Mr. Guy Hickok, treasur er and Mrs. William Lytle, pub licity director.
