fags nam Th O-XGOZI STATIZMAlt, Salem. Oregon, Sunday Morning. October 12. 1841 Crop Prospect Near Record Some Crops May Top 1937 Figure; Wheat Yield Is High WASHINGTON, Oct .-iJFf The agriculture department re ported today that a 2 per cent Ainyroveiiieuk u s uvy juwnu during September, apparently lifted this yeari aggregate pro duction to near the record estab lished in 1937. In the whole area east of the great plains, " warm weather in September hastened the maturing of late fields of corn, soy beans, beans, cotton and sorghums. ' Little damage from frost was reported, except locally in the Rocky mountain states. Production of principal food crops, the department said, was Impressive. Wheat Is expected to show the highest yield per acre on record 16 J bushels and a production of 961,194,000 bushels which would be the larrest total in any year except 1915. Crops of rice, dry beans and dry peas were all substantially larger than any previously har vested. Production of potatoes and sweet potatoes, although only about average, was said to be suf ficient for the country's needs. The aggregate commercial pro duction of other vegetables will probably exceed last year's record. The department said the 1941 commercial fruit crop was now expected to exceed the record crop of 1937. Corn production .was estimated at 2,626,000,000 bushels or the third largest crop since 1928. Pro duction last year totaled 2,449, 200,000 bushels. The department said the corn acreage was un usually small, but that husking reports indicated die yield seemed likely to average "30.5 bushels per acre, a yield exceeded in only two seasons, 1905 and 1906. With both barley and grain sorgnuuis exceeuuig pieviuua x ct ords and oats above average, these crops, together with corn, provide a total feed grain crop of 104,000,000 tons, the largest since 1932. This product ion' of feed grains Is sufficient," the depart ment said, "to permit farmers to Increase their flocks and herds the 6 per cent that seemed to be indicated during the sum mer and to feed fairly liberally as In other years of large sup plies without reducing the large reserves of grain carried over from last season." Hay , production was estimated at near 97,000,000 tons compared with last year's big crop of 95, 000,000 tons and a ten year aver age of less than 80,000,000 tons. The condition of western cattle and sheep ranges appeared to be the' best since 1927, the depart ment said. The condition of pas- the second highest since ' 1928. Milk production on October 1 was at record levels.
