Fire Caused By Tractor NimrocU Come Home With.1 Salmon From Trip to Alsea TURNER The fire department was 'called out to thef -M. A. Hill farm south of Turner ; Wednesday afternoon where a backfiring tractor had ignited gas and oil that had leaked onto the ground where the tractor had been parked under a machine shed. Flames leaping to the shed roof were quickly smothered by Hill before the fire truck arrived. Hill scraped dirt ; from the earthen floor of the shed and threw It on the base of the flames. Fire men arriving at the Hill home ex pressed appreciation " of his quick action as nearby was stored a barrel of gasoline and had it ex ploded it would have endangered the residence and other farm buildings. There was no loss to the tractor or machine shed. Heard Report 0 After a short business meeting the regular . drill period was given over to work on the station Tuesday. Several of the firemen wielding hammers and saws, con structed the large front door, which is to be hung on rollers on a track. The stairs leading to the upper floor will be completed soon. At the meeting several bills were allowed and routine business transacted. A fishing trip .to the Alsea over Sunday netted three Turner fish ermen live saunon, we largest, a chinook weighing 27 pounds, came to the hook of Archie Rankin, Turner rural earner. Balance of the catch were silversides with Rankin getting one Mervin Pear son two and Homer Haggard one. Accompanying her husband on the trip, Mrs. Haggard spent the day at Waldport and other ' beach points. . : - Mrs. Elepha Bond left Tuesday for an extended visit at Berkeley, cant, with her son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin. Bond and Suzanne. She expects to remain until after the Christmas holidays. Mrs. Anna Farris has just re turned from- a several weeks visit in Monmouth with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. T. B. McLaughlin, and at Wrenn with her son, Ray Farris and family. Sunday Mrs. Farris plans a trip to Portland, where she will be the guest of her son, Chris Farris, and Mrs. Laurence Frost and soa Wife of the commander of the U. 8. destroyer Greer which was at tacked by a submarine in the At lantic, Mrs. .- Laurence " Frost, shown above with her son, Laur ence .Walker Frost, was listening to the radio in her Washington, D. home when she was startled with the news that her husband's ship had been attacked. Tobias, Oregon City. Dr. and Mrs. L. R. Lima, Mrs, S. H. Lima and Connie Brown, all of Montevideo, Minn., have leas ed the home of Dr. and Mrs. H. E. Johnson on Coolidge street The Johnsons will leave soon for his army appointment. Dr. Lima, a maternal uncle of Margaret Wormdahl, is retired. Street Work Considered Property Holders Vote for Iprovement; Part WPA Funds SILVERTON Property' hold ers on South, Third and North First streets gathered Tuesday at the city hall to discuss the . im provement of these two streets. !' The; meeting was . called by City Manager. E. KBurton to ascertain the wishes of the residents in re gard to the type of improvement desired. With the exception of one person present the group ' ex pressed wishes I for concrete as originally planned. A. J. Titus I voted against the improvement 1 The improvement is covered by a $23,634 WPA project, of which the property holders will bear $11,626. ' The Catholic church Is receiv ing a new roof and will also get m new coat of paint, Amos Hiatt is doing the work. "v ;. Lions club members went on record .at their Tuesday night meeting favoring the privately owned building proposed as the new postoffice building for Sil verton. Members stated that this was not at all in opposition to the present set-up but that they un derstood that postal requirements were such that the building used at present would not meet them. As an entertainment feature of the meeting, Larry Carpenter and Dr. A. H. Smith showed their , eel ored pictures taken during sum mer vacations. Fat Lamb Named As Champion SILVER CLIFF Floyd Fox, jr of the Waldo Hills livestock chub won reserve champion on is Shropshire fat lamb exhibit at the Oregon state fair and received 55 cents per pound for the animal which was sold at the 4H sale Friday. ' Exhibits of fat lambs by Mar jorie Tate and Gene Gordon Mul- key were also sold, v bringing 12 cents and 11" cents tr pound Mar jorie's lamb placed third in its class and she was awarded the scholarship in that group.
