Smith and Mr. and Mrs. William L. Phillips. They celebrated their silvef wedding anni versaries and several hundred Salem and out-of-town folk were bidden to the affair. (Jesten-Miller photo.) Seen and Heard By JERYME ENGLISH CHARMINGLY . ARRANGED at home on Sunday when Mr. and Mrs. William L. Phillips and Mr. and Mrs. Linn C. Smith en tertained at the former's attrac tive residence .... Several hun dred guests were Invited - the affair was a surprise to many as the hosts were celebrating their silver wedding anniversar ies. .. . The news was told on small white napkins with the names of the couples and 1916 1941 printed in silver .... For . the important occasion Mrs. Phillips wore a stunning bright . paisley dress with bodice of egg shell fashioned with bishop sleeves and V neckline .... Mrs. Smith was all in white, the dress enhanced with eyelet embroid ery on the pockets and revers on the jacket . . . . Both attractive matrons carried colonial nose gays with silver streamers . . . . . The two couples have planned and talked of this celebration since 1916 when they spent their honeymoons at Seaside . . . . It was a beautiful picture tov see so many women in afternoon dresses and garden hats .... A few of those we noted .... Mrs. , Thomas Holman in a dashing White frock with all over pattern of large pink flowers and a white hat .... Miss Rovena Eyre in . - an attractive aqua lace gown fashioned with full skirt and long sleeves and worn with a1 Leghorn hat . . . . Mrs. John JV Elliott chic in a small plaid taf feta gown with white waist andf white halo hat with long streamers in back .... Mrs. Pal mer Macdonald of Portland pre siding at one of the serving ta bles and greeting her S a 1 em friends .... She was striking in a beige silk jersey gown and a ' matching hat . . . a pleasing con trast to her dark hair .... Mrs. Edgar T. Pierce in a good-looking gray and raspberry linen frock with plain raspberry jack et and matching hat . . . . Others assisting , . , . Mrs. Arthur Rahn in pink . , . Mrs. Richard Slater In black, with white jacket . . ' Mrs Thomas E. Rilea in a band some blue and white print frock Mrs. B. O. Schucking wear ing a pastel floral chiffon and an orchid Dinned to her shoulder . . . ' Greeting the guests at the door was young Mary Jane Bra bee, who was luscious in a white marquisette frock designed off the shoulder and short puffed sleeves edged in ruffling . . . On her long dark curls was a white halo hat . . . . Mr. and Mrs. Phillips' three -sons, Wil liam, Donald and James, . who are all handsome, enjoyed every minute of the party . . . assisting and mingling with the guests and enjoying pieces of the wed- ding cake .... The party, originally planned for outdoors, was moved inside only minutes before the guests arrived as rain drops began fall ing shortly before three o'clock . . . Later in the day the tables were moved out on the terrace as the skies cleared .... The hosts received in the living room and guests strolled through the lovely gardens and terraces, viewing the flower beds which Mrs. Phillips, herself, keeps . . . . her hobby is gardening- and she takes much pleasure working in her rock gardens and beds . . , The tables were covered with white - shadow organdy cloths and roses and sweet peas pro vlded the decorative note ir " ' """" v-T " JK ""': I 1 I f 1i .... . i ; On a separate table in the dining room was a large tiered wedding cake .... Music from a string trio, playing in the recreation room, was heard both In the house and garden .... A lovely new patio, complete with fire place, was finished this month in time for the party and there guests were served. A JUNE TEA on Tuesday when Mrs. Burke Loring Schmidt eh- tertained for her mother, Mrs. Robert Sweeny of Atlanta, Georgia, and her aunt, Miss Bruce Helams of Laurel, Miss. .... A number of Salem matrons and maids were invited to meet the two charming southerners, who are enjoying every minute : of their' stay in Oregon . . . . seeing the beaches, Crater lake and mountains .... Jennie is a gracious hostess and wore a pretty white organdy dress with short puff sleeves, rounded neckline and bands of lace on the full skirt .... Mrs. Sweeny was in a dusty rose silk crepe dinner gown and Miss Helams wore a pink faille frock fashion edd with a jacket . ; . Also re i. ceiving with the hostess and her guests was Mrs. Ray Marshall, mother of Mr. Schmidt, striking in a copper silk jersey frock with bright printed bodice. Guests enjoyed viewing Jen nie and Loring's attractive mod ernistic hojuse .... the living room on two levels .... bright blue and-(white wall paper in the dining, room with two corner cupboards painted blue .... a clever den where guests stopped and chatted .... the furnishings and color, schemes very unique . . . . Artistic flower arrange ments everywhere .... on the glass coffee table a large flat bowl filled with a ring of pan sies and primroses . . . . Sweet peas, poppies and lilies else where .... Due to rain we were not able to see the Schmidts lovely garden ard patio, but we understand it is grand and one can find Jennie any day working in the flowers .... Having tea together .... Mrs. Ralph E. "Purvine wearing a H bright ' red flannel jacket " and t navy turban left in their 4 . she and Ralph convertible coupe Friday for California and Mex ico .... Mrs. Homer Goulet in a biue tailored suit 'and burnt straw hat and a little on the wistful side as Homer, a lieuten ant in the reserves, is leaving to day for McChord Field, Wash. . . . . Mrs. V. E. Kuhn wearing a fox cape over her black suit .... Mrs.' John Hughes smart in a navy blue jacket ensemble with white trim and a blue turban . k ..' . Mrs. Werner Brown chic in a brown and white plaid wool suit and white turban .... Mrs. Thomas DeBeck Livesley dash ing in a brown and white silk jersey frock and a small brown hat trimmed with roses, which looked real to many, and carry ing a, good-looking large yellow purse .... Mrs. Edward Roth wearing a white cotton frock with small brown design and a white turban . . . , , White, a popular color," and worn by many who assisted . . Hostesses Entertain Mrs. Harris Lietz and Miss Jessie Blackburn are arranging a party for Monday, night at the former's home on South Liberty street Bridge will be In play during the evening and a linen shower will honor Miss Johnson. ' Kitchen Shower , Y Miss Mary Evelyn Minkiewitz has arranged a kitchen shower for Miss Johnson on Wednesday night at the Chemeketa street home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Minkiewitz. During the evening the guests will play cards and make a bride's book for Miss Johnson. A late supper will be served and garden flowers will be used about the rooms. Salem friends of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Cronin (Betty Hammond) will be interested to learn that they are now at home at Lake Oswego where they have taken a house. J , Out-of-Town Guests Arrive Salem Folk Are " on Trips . The summer months are the occasion for many visitors and ' travellers going to and from the capital. Each day brings new guests to Salem and at the same time others are leaving on short sojourns and extended vacations. Entertaining is more or less informal during the summer with out-of-town guests the incen tive for many luncheons, dinners and picnics. Expected to arrive in the cap- ' itaj,a week from today are Mr. , , -and Mrs. William F. Kennedy 1 CQ rSrPF (Margaret Doege) of New York iV11 UKXL City. They will be the house guests of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Doege, at their coun- try place. They are leaving New York Thursday on the Stream liner and will be here for three weeks. Mr. Kennedy received -his doctor's degree in economics at the University of Wisconsin this month. Also a guest at the Doege home during July f will be their other daughter, j Miss .Jean Doege, who now resides in Los Angeles where she is connected with the Lockheed Aircraft corporation. She will fly home on July 18 to be here, the last week her brother-in-law and sister are in Salem. The two girls have not seen each other for three years. Leaves for East Travellers are also many dur ing the first week of July. Mrs. B. B. Boylan is entraining on Saturday for Oil City, Penn., where she will be the guest of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr.and Mrs. Theodore Huntly Welch. (Elizabeth Boylan). She will remain in the eastern city for a month and will be a guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs,' Edwin Theodore Welch. Mrs.' Boylan is going east by the Can adian Pacific route and will make stops in Vancouver and Victoria, BC, Lake Louise and' Banff. She will return home by " way of Los Angeles. Leaving Tuesday for the east will be Mr. and Mrs. Ralph E. Moody. They will go by train and their destination is Wash ington, DC where they plan to take an apartment for several months. The Moodys will at tend the Elks grand lodge in Philadelphia this summer. Dr. and Mrs. Ralph Emerson Purvine left by motor Friday for a vacation trip to California and Mexico. In Berkeley they will visit with Dr. Purvine's sisters, Miss Helen and Miss Margaret Purvine. In Santa Barbara they will be the guests of two form er Salem residents, Dr. and Mrs. A. Terrence King. Come from South Lt Col. and-Mrs. Earl Flegel are expected to leave the end of this week for Salem. They are coming west from El Paso, Texas where Lt Col. Flegel Is stationed. They will be accom panied by their children and plan to be here for a month. They will be the guests of Mrs. Flegel's parents, Dr. and Mrs. R. E. Lee Steiner. Returning to her New York City home today will be Mrs. John Goodwillie, who has been the house guest, of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ivan B. Rhodes, during the month of June. Many informal parties! have -honored the popular visitor during her stay in the capital. Mrs. G rover W. Hillman and her daughter, Miss Calline Hill man, are leaving the first of the week for RocKaway where they will spend the summer months. Mr. Hillman and his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Les ter Carter, will join them on weekends. Also spending the summer at Rockaway are Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Roberts (Phyllis Saunders), Mrs. Rob erts is a niece of Mrs. Hillman and was married at the Hillman home this spring. Slated for Thursday, July 3 is the marriage of Miss Edna Baer, daughter of Mrs. Katie Baer, and Mr. Merle Beckner, son of Mr. and Mrs. George G. Beck ner of Salem. The ceremony will be performed at the Beckner home before members. of the two families at 8 o'clock in the evening. The bride will wear a white taffeta floor length dress for her wedding. The dress is fashioned princess style and her fingertip length veil is of tulle. She will carry a bouquet of gardenias and delphinium. Mrs. Harold Westfall will be the honor attendant - and she will be gowned in blue, taffeta and will wear a corsage of gar denias. Mr. Westfall will serve as best man for Mr. Beckner. A reception will be held after the ceremony for the wedding guests. For traveling the bride will wear a brown sports dress with barley beige coat After a wedding trip the couple will re side in Salem at 675 North Church street Both Miss Baer and her fiance attended Salem schools and he Is now with the Marion county highway department Miss Denham Is Honored Miss Mildred Denham, bride elect of Mr. Robert Ramage, was the guest of honor at a kitchen shower given at the home of Mrs. Harold Kniess on Thursday night with Miss Louise Ramage and Mrs. Elton Embrey as hostesses. COMMERCIAL Marriage Is Solemnized Saturday Of Interest to their many friends Is the marriage of Miss Margaret Elizabeth Perkins of Salem, daughter of the late Commander and Mrs. Fred M. Perkins, and Mr. Andrew Free man Sears, son of Mrs. Nellie Sears of Portland. The couple exchanged their vows Saturday morning at 10 o'clock at the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in. Portland. Mr. Donald W. Yantis of Sea side, uncle of the bride, gave her away in marriage. For her" wedding the bride chose a white moire taffeta gown fash ioned with a train and a sweet heart neckline. Her long tujle veil was arranged in a coronet of seed pearls. She carried a bouquet of pink rosebuds. Mrs. F. H. Ray, cousin of the bride, was the matron of honor. She wore an aquamarine or ganza frock and carried a bou quet of Talisman roses. Mr. Tom Yantis, brother of Mrs. Ray, was best man and ushers were Mr. Stanley Sears of Corvallis, brother of the bridegroom, and Mr. F. H. Ray of West Slope. A reception at the home of Mrs. Elliott P. Roberts was held after the wedding for Imembers of the two families. Mr. and Mrs. Sears' will make their home in Reedsport The bride is a graduate of St Mary's academy In Portland and has been residing in Salem for several years where she has been connected with the unem ployment compensation commis sion. Mr. Sears attended Port land schools and is now in business in Reedsport. Mr. - Milton L. Meyers re turned Friday night from a trip which took him to Omaha, Ne- ' braska. Johnson, the former Pa Young Maicfs at Beach Resort Miss Margaret Barrett, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip E Barrett, left Friday for Portland to meet Miss Dorothy Greer of Baker, a Chi Omega sorority sis--ter. They were the guests of Miss Frances Bailey in Portland 'and Saturday went on to Seaside where they were joined by Miss Dorothy Koschmider of Salem, Miss Alice Trullinger of Astoria and Miss Helen Mullen of North Bend. The girls are all students at the University of Oregon and will spend a week at the 'coast and on July 4 will celebrate the birthdays of Miss Barrett and Miss Greer.
