I i r Iffinm Santiam River Is Steadily Growing SCIO A $150 nugget reported turned up in tractor dredging op erations on the Little North Fork of the Santiam river, about 25 miles east of Scio, during the early part of the winter, is the inspiration for more extended work in that region, according to ' Cyrus Peery of near Scio. Peery has been identified with mining in the Elkhorn district on the upper Santiam for several years, succeeding his father, the late Bob Peery, as secretary manager of" the Crown mining company, one of the early oper ators on the Little North Fork. The Crown company has been engaged primarily in quartr oper ations, having driven a tunnel some distance in the mountain slope to reach ores previously en countered in a 100-foot shaft. The company, inactive at the mine during the winter on account of snow, plans active work as soon as practicable, Peery reported here. Placer mining approaching pro fitable proportions, is in its infan cy in the Elkhorn district, accord ing to many who have kept in touch with developments there. It promises to grow in volume and results in the opinion of mining men. Tractors for dredging work is a new slant in mining in the upper farm home near Scio April 2. There are two sons and another daughter in the family. Word reached Scio this week that Gordon Brown, son of Boone Brown of Scio, has recently been assigned to the medical . corps at Camp Grant, 111. SCIO Sponsoring civic pro grams at the Scio school grounds and entrances to the city, the lo cal garden club has requested ad vice from the state highway com mission as to placing Port Orford cedars at principal entrances to the city. Shrubs have been do nated by Mrs. J. Branson of Scio. Scio Rebekah lodge, the Pythian Sisters and the Masonic unit are among cash donors for programs inaugurated by the club which held its monthly meeting this week with Mrs. M. D. Zander. SCIO Several Scio members plan to attend the semi-annual district convention of the Odd Fel lows convention of the Scio dis trict to be held at Crawfordsville in late April, The district includes Linn and parts of Marion and Benton counties. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Miller, Monroe, visited their mother, Mrs. Cora Miller, Scio, a few days ago. The two families, accompa nied by Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Mc Donald. Scio. visited the Vincent! North Santiam area, and interest , McDonald family and Allen Mc- In placer mining has been inten sified by reports of discovery of nuggets and fine gold in stream beds. High wind, hail, rain and light ning caused some damage in a narrow strip of country near Scio Saturday afternoon. .Tree fruits and tender gardens suffered some. Mr. and Mrs. John Corser, Hillsboro, visited at the W. H. Dennison home in Scio Tuesday, Mr. Corser being the honored guest at a birthday dinner in the evening. Others in attendance in cluded Miss Florence Dennison, North Albany teacher; Miss Eva Corser, Aumsville, and Mr. and Mrs. Everett Den Herder, Albany. A daughter, IVx pounds, chris tened Doris Anene, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Boone Brown at the Church Board Asks Money SILVERTON Amos Corhouse, chairman of Trinity church board of directors appeared before the Aid society Wednesday in a plea for assistance to build the pro posed new parsonage. The society, of which Mrs. C- J- Dahlen is president, voted to donate $i00 a year until the needed amount was reached. Members had individual ly pledged better than $3000, Mr. Corhouse stated. It was expected that other societies within the church body would try to match the donation of the Aid society so that the building could proceed in the near future. Thesociety also voted to hold Its annual May 17 festival in ob servance of the former Norwegian Independence day and to serve coffee at the Melby sale, to be held soon. rel E. Huber, Lloyd D. Mrs. Lil lie Wilson, Scio route 3, is the junior matron of the lodge. Sev eral Scioans have memberships at Jefferson. SCIO Councilman M. B. Cyrus is to preside at the regular monthly meeting of the aldermen April 7. Purchase or lease of a site tfor depositing city rubbish is to hjave further attention of the council. Mayor Withers, member of the council for the 4 -year pe riod ended December 31, is tour ing the east and south with Mrs. Withers. Revival of Boy Scout activities at Scio is sought in the sponsor ship of the movement by the lo cal Masonic lodge. M. D. Zander, scoutmaster for the last few years and master of the lodge, has en listed the aid of Executive Secre tary Ruddiman, Salem, to assist in getting the work on its feet SCIO Farm union members in large numbers in the Scio com munity plan , to attend the sec ond quarterly county convention of farm unions at Dever on April 12. Mrs. Alice Sprague of the Ri verview union near Scio is coun ty secretary. Dever union is lo cated near Albany. Anton Benes, Scio farmer and dairyman, is expected home soon from Tucson, Ariz., where the family spent the whiter. Benes has been in declining health since his World war service overseas and the annual visit to the south west is made for the benefit of his health. The little daughter at tends school here.
