Narrow ; irregularity persisted from the start except for a few strong spots among specialties and senior. Issues and trends were in definite at the close. - The Associated Press average of CO stocks was unchanged at 44.4. Dealings were relatively, slow, transfers totaling 625,540 shares compared with 720,800 yesterday. Bullish sentiment still was present in Wall street but this was diluted to considerable extent by further apprehension over the possibility of this country actively ' joining the European war and the revival of" worries regarding the mounting tax bill which will eon front f business and industry as well as the wage-earning public. Isolated share climbers includ ed preferreds of Foster Wheeler end Franklin Simon. The former was up 6 points and the latter S, both at new 1940-41 peaks. Modest improvement was re tained by Bohn Aluminum, Para mount Pictures, Corn Products, Consolidated Aircraft, Montgomery Ward, Studebaker, Western Un ion, American Can, Allied Chemi cal, Santa Fe, Johns-ManTllle and tJS Rubber preferred. On the offside were Chrysler, 173 Steel, Sears Roebuck, Olenn .Martin, Dow Chemical, J. C. Pen ney, Savage Arms, Westinghouse, Texas Corp., Great Northern, Ken xteoott and American Telephone. J Elizabeth Carey Rites Conducted LEBANON Elizabeth T. Carey died January 4 at the heme of her daughter, Mrs. Bert Powell, and was buried January 7 from the Methodist church. Rev. D. Lester Fields officiated and the Howe Funeral home was In charge. Interment was , In the family lot In the Masonic ceme tery. Mrs. Carey would have been 8 years old next month. She was born in Pleasant Hill, Mo., where he was married in 1874 to Wil liam Carey. In 1880 the family came west and in 1886 located in this community where they hare lived continuously since then. Mr. Carey died in 1830. . One daughter, Leona Crowder, also preceded her in death. She leaves one daughter, Mrs. Vallee May .Powell of Lebanon and seven grandchildren, Clarence Powell, Etta Miller and Lola Harnett of Lebanon; Zella Howard and Wil liam Roy and Clifford Crowder of Portland. Urges Increased Small Seed Crop Increased planting of small steed crops was recommended by Professor Q. R. Hyslop, Oregon State college, at a district grange agricultural meeting including -representatives from 12 western Oregon counties here yesterday. Hyslop said vetch production ould be Increased five times' the amount ot the 140 production, which was 20,000,000 pounds in Oregon. He also recommended In creased production of orchard grass, chewing fescue and creep ing red fescue. Woman Mayor Bids Office Farewell 8ILVERTON As a farewell gesture to her two years as mayor of Sllverton, Zetta Schlador had her copy of the city charter auto graphed by the city officials who had worked with her these two years. , The charter goes out of effect with Myor Schlador and the new charter, voted in last May. comes into effect. Elder Fish, who serves the Seventh Day Adventist con gregations in Lebanon and Al bany, officiated. : Interment was in the IOOF cemetery. He Is survived by his wife. Hazel Davis Clem, to whom he was married in Albany in 1924; a son, Dale, aged 13; his mother, Mrs. Amos Clem; two brothers, Thomas and Clarke Clem of Leb anon; five sisters, Mrs. V. E. Wheat Market Hit By Price Reverse CHICAGO, Jan. 7-i"p)-Wheat futures suffered the first major price reverses of the year today, losses running as much as a cent a bushel at times, and closing figures for all deliveries were virtually at the session's lowest levels. Wheat finished the day - cent lower than the previous clos ing levels. May 87.
