December 4. 190 Council Meets Silverton Woman Mayor Leads Last Meeting for 1940; Bonds Sold t SILVERTON The last regular city council meeting to be held at Silverton this year and to be pre cided OTer by Silverton' woman saayor, Zetta Schlador, was held Monday night with two main la ities settled. The refunding bond Issue of $4500 was sold to Atkin son, Jones and Co., of Portland at $100.33 for each $100 to bear Interest at Zli per cent per an num, and the appointment of R. A. Fish and L. F. Tucker to the elty library board to serve with Mrs. H. B. Latham and Mrs. G. B. Bentson, present members. The additions to the board were suggested by Harriet Long, state librarian, who spoke at Silverton in November. Miss Long suggest ed that members of the city coun cil be placed on the city public library board. Among minor matters taken up were recommendations made for the issuance of six liquor licenses to include those of Rolfe Bentson, A. H. McClure, George Manalts, Fete Sorenson, Toney's and Leon ard Guage. An application from A. H. "Wheeler, present night patrolman, for reappointment was read and placed on file until after the first of the year. C. A. Boatwright, from the WPA offices, sent a letter asking that the city inform his offices of legal property rights and the le gal agency responsible for main tenance of the East Oak street for which the city has asked an Improvement project. The matter was placed in the hands, of the eity attorney. Rex Albright. A petition asking for the im provement of Orchard and Wells streets was read and placed on file until other street work is to be taken up after the first of the year. Mayor Schlador reported that she had been asked to bring the matter of a light for the end of Church street before the city council. It was pointed out that there was a light on Bartlet street and that this was the end of the city limits. Library Reports Grculation Gain SILVERTON November proved a busy month for the Sil verton public library with circula tion increasing 499 over that of October. Also this November showed an increase in circulation of 24 4 over November of a year ago. Should circulation hold up in December, the 19 40 will top that ef a year ago, according to mem bers of the library staff. The November report, accepted fey the city council Monday night, also showed that 35 new volumes had been added by gift and pur chase. Magazines are proving popular and Mrs. H. B. Latham and Mrs. G. B. Bentson, board members, ex press appreciation for the, many ew copies being donated by Sil rerton people to the library. Brother Visits Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hammer had as their guests Sunday his bro ther and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Hammer and grandson, Junior Hammer, of Salem. Boy Sees Bombers Three Lincoln boys, Garlon Wallace, Jimmy Mickey and Nor man Merrick accompanied by Joe Shepard of Zena enjoyed a four day trip to Seattle recently. While there they visited the municipal airport, and saw the big bombers. the Tacoma Narrows bridge which collapsed last month, inspected a number of large ships and found much of interest at tbe museum. Mrs. Mary Miller (Mary Hack ett) former Lincoln girl left for her home at Klamath Falls Sun day after being a guest at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hackett, since Thanks giving. Sergeant Visits Sergeant and Mrs. Richard Smith and daughter, Julie Marl ann spent the weekend here as guests of Mrs. Smith's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tracy Walling. Ser geant Smith is located at Camp Murray. Spring Valley Lad Suffers Leg Hurt SPRING VALLEY With two bones broken in his leg between the knee and ankle and his hip badly bruised by an unmanage able horse Emery Alderman, stu dent at Salem Junior high school was taken to a local hospital Friday. The horse, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Carl Alderman, had gotten into tbe wrong stall and when Emery tried to get it out he was caught between it and the side of the stall. Questionnaires Given to Boards WOODBURN Completed ques tionnaires by registrants under the selective service act are being sent in to the North Marion coun ty draft board. The local board, which has its office in Wood burn, states that about 25 per cent of the an swered questionnaires are incom pletely filled out. More care was urged on the registrants in fill ing out these papers and in hav ing them verified. A number of associate legal advisers have been named in various parts of north Marion district to assist registrants. These men are: Silverton, Norris Ames and Urlin S. Page; Silver ton, route 3. M. B. Ford; Mt. Windsors Return From California SPRING VALLEY Mr. and Mrs. Frank Windsor have Just returned from the first Thanks giving ever spent in the home of their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. L. T. Holler (Irene Windsor) at Santa Clara, Cal. They were accompanied by their son, Vernon. Their trip extended over 2000 miles. In spite of the fact that the weather was extremely cold the party went clam digging at Half Moon hay clad In bathing suits. The clams are of the Pismo variety and only 15 are allowed each person and they have to measure at least 5 Inches in length. Rakes are used instead of shovels. Fishing was- also a winter pas time. The largest striped bass caught by their group weighed six pounds. The Windsors how ever didn't Indulge in the popular sport of shark fishing. Error Is Claimed By Molalla Mayor MOLALLA Dr. E. R. Todd, Molalla's outgoing mayor, de clared today that an error In tax figures submitted to the Clacka mas county assessor brings the city tax levy here to IB. 8 mills for 1X1 Instead of lt.l mills as heretofore computed. The assessor's office had re ported an increase In the city levy here based on the council's request for' 13950 in taxes. Claude previous ly attended Garfield school. Cast Removed Gladys Van Hess had the cast removed from her -right leg on Monday. She broke her leg about two months ago when she fell from a school swing over Sunday. Bazaar Held The Kiugwood Legion auxiliary is holding a bazaar in tbe PEP building December 5, 6 and 7. Attend 4H Meet Twenty-five local grade school pupils completed their 4H work this summer and are entitled to be excused from school on Friday afternoon to attend the Polk county achievement day program at Dallas. Pupils signing up for 4H work this winter will get to go. Gift Exchange Is Set by Zena Qub ZENA Mrs. W. Stacey explained the ad vantage of the mink pool being conducted In Portland to sell at the Seattle fur exchange auction and also told of the live fox and mink show held recently in Gresh am. Others reporting" on the show were Mrs. C. W. Stacey, who told of the fur garment demonstration, Frank Glaser, Mrs. E. B. Hen ningsen and Mr. Gross of the experimental fur farm in connec tion with OSC. Gross also gave ah interesting talk on experiments being conducted with mink in re gard to feeding and the result of different methods. Eugene - Finlay talked on the pooling of mink and a general discussion of matters of Interest to the fur farmers. Grcle Qub Held At Grand Island GRAND ISLAND The Mothers Circle club met Thursday at the home of Mrs. J. H. Tompkins with Mrs. Harry Tompkins as sisting hostess. Honoring the homecoming of former members was a special feature of the after noon with Mrs. Etta Wiley of Ashland and Mrs. Austin Allen of the Unionvale district present. New members joining the club were Mrs. Hazel Clow, Mrs. Elea nor Schindler and Mrs. Lucille Kilgore. Other guests present included Mrs. Sarah Tompkins and daugh ter, Verna, of Cutler City, Mrs. F. H. Hollister of McMinnville, Mrs. Edward Clow and Mrs. James Kerr. The club will have charge of the sale of the Christmas seals again this year. Lucas entertained Wednesday for mem bers of the Waconda Community club with a club dinner served at 1 o'clock. During the business session it was decided that the next meeting, December 18th, would be the Christmas party with an ex change of gifts. Three tables of "600" were played with prises for high score going to Mrs. W. E. McGilchrist and Mrs. A. M. Boyles of Salem. Present were Mesdames Julian DeJardln, Frank Thompson, A. J. Rasmussen, F. Ra ver, Bonneville administrator, will be guest of honor at a banquet at Monmouth hotel Thursday night at I o'clock. At 8 o'clock the ceremony of turning on Mon mouth's new street lights will be held. A public entertainment -will follow in the high school gym nasium, all in celebration of the advent of Bonneville current into Monmouth. Mayor F. R. But no one has seen anything of him sine - the accident in which the , Golden truck and the Ingram car were involved on the corner of Second and Rose streets in which little Billy Rogers was killed. The dog was not Injured in any way and It is thought that as he is very sensitive, he may be in hiding from fright or grief. Club Organized The first junior woman's civic club ; was organized Thursday night, at a meeting at the home of Joella Mayer. Officers were elected as follows: president. Miss Mayer; vice-president. Mrs. Nel lie Reid; secretaary, Mrs. Elinor Miller; treasurer, Mrs. Cecil Kamhak; parliamentarian, Mrs. Del Davenport. Meetings will be held the first and third Thursday nights of each month. The next meeting will be held at the Mayer home. At that time plans for the projects to be undertaken will be made and the president will name her committees. Orchestra Formed Dick Chapman, Harold Reeves. Kyle Callahan, Norman Ramsey and Harold Post have organized an amateur orchestra. They play ed for one of the Snow Peak dances last week. Is in Hospital Mrs. Leonard Sherrill of Wat erloo was taken to the Lebanon hospital Sunday with an Injured knee, the result of an accident at the Waterloo four corners when the Sherrill car, driven by Lois Sherrill and a car driven by C. M. Terry, also of Waterloo col lided. No one else was injured though both cars were rather badly damaged Other recently ad mitted patients in the hospital are Fred Baxter, Mrs. Ona Weit zell and Mrs. Edward Landstrom of Lebanon and Lewis Pederson and Mrs. Leroy Cadwallader of Foster. Visit From Washington Mr. and Mrs. George Ryan and son came from Long Beach, Wash., to visit Mrs. Ryan's par ents, Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Boggle. They brought with them another grandson of the Boggie's, Billy Walker. Club Meets Mrs. Asa Baker invited a few extra guests for the luncheon of the Sunshine club Tuesday to honor her sister-in-law, Mrs. May Hauk of Redmond, who is visiting her. . Refugees Aided Mrs. Edward Voegelein, presi dent of the WCTU entertained the group Friday. Plans for fu ture work were discussed and a program led by Mrs. Leroy Cross ley was presented while the mem bers served making shirts for British refugees. Welcome Xiece Mr. and Mrs. Paul Chilcote spent a couple of days in Portland to welcome their new niece, Kar en Kent. They returned Monday in time to attend the dinner given in honor of the birthday of City Recorder George Randle, Mrs. Chilcote's father. Attend Games Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Toole and sons came from Eugene to visit Mrs. Toole's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Michels. They were joined here by Toole's brother, Michael Toole and his friend, Orville McEwen, of Nyssa. All attended the game between the Lebanon and Corvallis high schools Friday night and the next day went to the Oregon State game. Bethel Community Glut Pictures- of , South Shown; : Plans Made for Holiday Entertainment BETHEL At the meeting of the Community club Friday night auto-chrome moving pictures were shown -by Fred devries, of .his recent trip ' by, car . through the southern states. Of these, special Interest was attracted by the pic tures taken in South Carolina, Georgia. F Mississippi and Louisi ana and of ttre great colleges and schools for the colored young people. An additional entertain ment feature was a group of songs with guitar . acempaniment by Hubert Aspenwall of Hazel Green. .Mary Hamrick was program chair man and introduced the guests. Allison Klug presided at the meeting, assisted by Jean Haln. Pauline Riensche led group sing ing, with Mrs. Helen Schulz Em mel at the piano. The December meeting of the club will be held in connection with the Christmas entertainment of the school. Committees for the meeting in January were drawn as follows: entertainment, W. R. Baker, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph A. Wilson. Mr. and Mrs. George Hain; refresh ments, Clurus Hageman, Simpson Hamrick, Wanda Froehlich. A resolution referring to the death of Cass A. Nichols, who was a much loved member of the club and of the district, was pre sented by Simpson Hamrick. Mrs. J. G. Lauderback presented the needs of the Red Cross . and re ceived dues. In charge of the serving of re freshments were Mr. and Mrs. J. K. Wolfe, Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Schulz, Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Matten Educator Speaks At Independence Independence D. A. Emerson of the state department of educa tion spoke to the Independence Lions clubs on Monday. His topic was on the need of change in the high school curriculum. Points stressed were development of re sponsibility of the high school stu dent, development of work habits, and reading for enjoyment Instead of labor. The topic being of inter est and the time limited, Emerson promised to return and finish dis cussion of the subject. Dr. Charles A. Howard, pres ident of tbe Oregon College of Ed ucation, was a guest of the club. Next Monday will be Lion Stunt day. Chinese Carnival Held by Boosters SILVER CLIFF The Chinese carnival sponsored by the Silver CHff Boosters club Saturday night reports over 10 dollars netted by the various concessions. It will be applied on the piano fund. Program numbers were "Ameri ca the Beautiful," group singing; violin, piano and aceordian trio. Mr. and Mrs. James Mulkey and daughter, Jeanne Marie; Chinese stunt, directed by Mrs. Floyd Fox; piano solo, Lloyd Mulkey; reading, "Paul Bunyan and His Blue Ox," John Brewer; piano solo, Jeanne Marie Mulkey.
