By ERIC FITZSlMONa SILVER FALLS T CAMP, July 12 Bear Creek and Hemlock did all of the hiking Wednesday, with the former taking the hike to the new smith Creek camp, and the latter going around the falls and then back to camp, i The Bear Creek group led by Jim 'Arm strong, Lloyd Jackson, and the Deacon left "T" carapi at 10:30 and took the truck trail to the Buck mountain firebreak, from where they hiked down into the Smith Creek camp. Alter eating their lunch, the entire group swam in the new cement pool and then started back to camp, reach ing there about 5:15 p.m. Doug Yeater proved to be a real asset on the trip; by finding the right trail twice when the rest of the group was lost. A few minutes after the Bear Creek group arrived back in camp, Ralph Yocom and his bunch from Hemlock slid down the mountain back of Hillside in a cloud of dust, as they returned from their Journey. Two charming visitors in camp Wednesday were Anna Lou and Rosemary Detweiler from Willa mette university, accompanied by Prof, and Mrs. Lovell j and George Gutekunst. They enjoyed a swim In the camp pool, before returning to Silver Creek falls. I Norman Hinges holds the record for the hike between camp and the falls, having brought his group from Trickle j falls over the two-mile trail in the record time of 45 minutes. "Skippy" Griffiths, however, pulled a "stunt of his own that left : everyone In camp gasping In amazement. He ran the two miles j from the Smith Creek road to ! camp in the short time of 29 minutes. Murray Wade, the camp fish erman, seems to have! learned his lesson. Because of a superfluity of oratorical ability, he was trans ferred from the Deacon's table, a few days ago; but on his row' to cease making, everyone's ear drums vibrate, he was reinstated at his former eating place; across the table from Doug Yeater. Tom Medley and company from Hemlock staged a daring raid on Bear creek and Hillside two nights ago. Everyone in the two camps was In bed, when the sound of running feet was heard on the path leading past the cabins. Sud denly a number of heavy; rocks did a wild fandango on the porch and walls of the cabins;; and the patter of running feet gradually died out in the distance. At lead er's meeting the next morning, raids were ruled out, so peace has reigned in camp ever: since. Rer. Clifford Merrill Drury is an authority on pioneer history, and several of his books are to be found at the Salem public li brary.' Most recent of these is "Elkanah and Mary Walker." His book, "Henry Harmon Spalding," is a record of pioneers of old Ore gon. "Marcus Whitman. MD" is another of the well-known Drdry books. The author is professor of church history at the San Francisco Theological seminary. : The Centennial chorus will be represented by 60 of its singers, who will be attired in Centennial style and costume. Births and Deaths In County Higher I According to the report issued from the Marion county depart ment .of health yesterday, there has been an increase in births and deaths In the county for the first six months of 1910 as com pared with the same period of time In 1930. Births totaled 002, 34S male and 317 female, as against a total of 631 for 1139. There was an increase of 15 in the deaths this year. There were 23 deaths due to communi cable diseases. The most deaths were caused by heart disease, 89; cancer, 6 0 ; disease of the ar teries, 14; kidney disease, 31, and apoplexy, 41. Automobile acci dents took 11 lives this year as compared with six last year. The prowler who entered the library failed In an attempt to pry off the combination -ot the sate while the one who entered the cleaning establishment f o a n d nothing but insurance policies In the unlocked safe. The thief climbed a ladder to the roof at Foreman's and low ered himself through a skylight by a cord which apparently broke while he was still several feet from the floor. There was no money In the safe, but some locked boxes con taining Insurance policies were pried open. The safe bore a sign stating that it was unlocked. A man's shirt was all that was found missing. Entrance to the library was gained through a window into the children's room on the basement floor and an unsuccessful attempt was made to pry open the safe In the librarian's office with- a freight car brake bar.
