Western Sportsbag By LOUDON KELLY DENVER, Feb. 29.-i?-Peak-to-peak peeking: Unless March and their oppo nents come in like a Lion, Colo rado's powerful champions will complete their fourth successive basketball season without a con ference defeat in their field house, hardly more than a good punt distant from the nearby moun tains. In fact, Colorado has been beaten only once in its Boulder arena, splitting the series with Oklahoma of the Big Six in De cember, 1938. The Buffalo, taught winning basketball by a handsome young man frftja the cornfields named Frosty Cox, ex-Kansas star. clinched its second straight Big Seven crown last week and winds up its home season against Brig ham Young tomorrow night. Colorado has lost only -twice this season, to Utah State and Duquesne by three and two points, and is one of the 11 teams nomi nated for the invitation college tournament at Madison Square Garden next month. . Aside to Jack Dempsey: The high school basketball team in your home town, Manas sa, Colo., (pop. 953), won its league championship and will compete in the district tourna ment. His own short stride and a ne gro phantom named 111 Brown helped to turn 5-foot-4 inch Greg Rice of Missoula, in western Montana, into a distance galloper capable of running that 13:55.9 three-mile in New York last Sat urday. The former Notre Dame captain also raced a 9:01 two mile this season. In high school Rice wanted to be a sprinter, but dusky Hi Brown whipped him so much that he re alized the dashes weren't just long enough for him. He shifted to the mile, but at Notre Dame his coach figured his short steps were better suited to the two mile jaunt. Montana has produced another standout distance runner in John Munskl, Missouri journalism stu dent from Lewistown, who has finished in front In the Big Six so often he's nicknamed "Lone some. He went down fighting and now Roy "Cowboy" Petsch, m Nebraska quarterback last fall from Scott s Bluff, says he's stowing away the gloves for keops. Petsch had won 29 straight before breaking his nose and his string against Omaha's Jack Fickler in the midwest Golden Gloves tourney. "I was waiting for someone to come along and beat me," said the cowboy.
