Schreiber were entertained in the Methodist church parlors, Immediately after evening services by their congre gation, honoring them on their 1 2d - wedding anniversary. Mrs. H. A. They were re turning from Salem, where they had sees MGone With the Wind, when they found the road blocked by a large snag which the wind had blown from a tree. Since the suae was too large to move without help, they sat m their car about six hours waiting- for another car. Finally Lee walked to Detroit for help. They got home about S a. m. Sunday. IOf photov Missionary Tells Of Life in Japan TURNER , Mrs. Maude Whlttemore Madden, returned missionary from Japan, talked at the Women's Missionary society meeting at the Christian church Thursday. She and her husband, M. B. Madden, have come to make their home in Turner after 44 years as missionaries in Osaka. Japan. Mrs. Madden has written sev eral books about life In the Ori ent, Including, "Land of the Cherry Blossoms," "When the East Is in the West." and "Young Hearts in Old Japan.' Many modern Improvements have been made In building, liv ing and dress since they first went to Japan, Mrs. Msdden said. Both school and church attend ance Is increasing. One married daughter has re mained In Japan to continue the missionary work. One son lives in Oregon and another in Seattle. John G. Weisner Diet LEBANON John G. Three power line posts broke off almost simultaneously just above the ground north of town early Wed nesday morning. Mrs. C. D. Boone is quite ill at her home with flu. Mr. Boone is now able to be out of bed, after having been confined with flu about 10 days. Son Is Transferred LEBANON Mrs. Marie Do besh has had a letter from her son Harry telling that he has been transferred to March field, Calif., and is engaged in aerial photography. He has been sta tioned at the Presidio for some time. Runs for Commissioner SCIO Ed Bilyeu of near Scio has announced his candidacy for democratic nomination for Linn county commissioner to succeed F. W. Cooley, who is also a can didate. Bilyeu has spent his en tire life as a farmer In this com munity. Back From Hospital . FAIRFIELD Shirley Ronje, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O. J. Ronje, is recovering from a ser ious infection resulting from a boll. She returned Friday from a Portland hospital where she was taken for treatment. Lebanon Fireman Is Given Leave LEBANON The city council granted tit day leave of absence to Fire Chief Mervin Oilson who has been offered the position of assistant stats fire marshaL This will give him time to try the work before giving up his connection with the local fir department. Joyce Infant Buried SCIO Loretta Joyce, Infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Purdy of near Scio, was buried at Miller cemetery Sunday, with the Rev. W. H. McLain of near Shelburn in charge ot services. The baby died at a Salem hospital Saturday morning. Pluard Service Held ST. LOUIS Funeral services were held at the St. Louis Catho lic church Tuesday for Nora Pluard, 74, who died Saturday at Scotts Mills. She had been a resident of St. Louis nearly all her life. Rev. Daniel O'Connell conducted the services.
