The program numbers are "The Meaning of Arbor Day," Donald Thnrman; "Arbor Day Song." a poem by Marie Phillips; "Tree Planting on the Pacific Coast," Geraldine Wolf; "The Heart of a Tree." poem reading by Geraldine Olson; a play. "The Story of an English Christmas Tree"; reading. "Trees," Ruth Retling. Lois Wacken is in charge of program, Andrew Zahara the planting. The school Is a busy place with three special days in Febru ary the shortest month. Many pu pils hare been absent past month because of measles and influ enza. The new puppet play are being prepared. Bell Talks DALLAS At the February meeting; of the Dallas Wom an's club held at Library hall Tuesday afternoon a special program in observance of the golden jubilee of the General Federation of Women's clubs and also a patriotic program was presented. Various women's patriotic groups of Dallas had been in vited to the meeting with mem-v bers from the DAR, auxiliary of the American Legion, auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies of the OAR. Also present were members of the Monmouth Civic club and the lo cal junior woman's club. Especially honored at the meet ing was Mrs. J. G. Van Orsdel, charter member of the Dallas Woman's club, who was chosen as the pioneer club woman of the local club in connection with the golden jubilee of the General Federation. She was escorted to a place of honor at the beginning of the meeting. The program consisted of the following numbers announced by Mrs. J. Paul Bollman, president ' of the club; two piano solos by Miss Elizabeth Boylan of Salem; ! two vocal solos by Raymond Van Dyke accompanied by Clark : Robb; minuet by Sharon Hall i and Teddy Swensen and tap dance by Flora Gay De Forest of Mon ', mouth, students of Mrs. Dorothy i Craven. Mrs. Harold Holite act ed as accompanist. ' Mrs. Charles Bilyeu, chairman , of the Golden Jubilee observance ! for the Dallas club and past pres ' ident of the Oregon Federation of I Women's clubs, was introduced ; and had charge of the remainder i of the program. This included the I presentation of a corsage and gift to Mrs. T. G. Van Orsdel; re ' sponse by Mrs. Van Orsdel; talk by Mrs. George T. Gerlinger of Portland, former president of the ! Bell, principal of the Dallas junior high school and past commander of the Carl B. Fenton post of the American Le gion, gare the address of the aft ernoon. He talked on "American ization" and told how this work was carried on by the Legion, in the schools and in the home. At the business meeting, preced ing the program, the club voted to give $S for Finnish relief. Mrs. Cecil Dunn, member of the schol arship loan committee, reported a successful benefit card party for this fund; Mrs. C. C. Gettman, member of committee to sell but tons to raise money for the fight against infantile paralysis, report ed a successful sale. Others on this committee Included Mrs. Howard Hall, Mrs. Dwight Webb, Mrs. Joe Vine and Mrs. E. B. Bos satti. A written report was read from Mrs. W. G. Vassall and Mrs. Os car Hayter presenting the geran ium as the choice of the local club for the flower to be used in con nection with the Golden Jubilee celebration. This choice will be sent to Washington, DC, to com pete with choices of other clubs in the United States. Following the program a de lightful tea hour was enjoyed. Golden bells marked 1889 and 193 9 were used in decorations. The tea table was centered with a large tiered cake trimmed in gold and guarded by gold tapers. Pre siding at the tea table were Mrs. Harold D. Peterson, president of the Oregon Federation of Wom en's clubs, Mrs. George T. Gerlin ger, Mrs. Riley CraTen and Mrs. Conrad Stafrin. Hostesses Included Mrs. Oscar Hayter, Mrs. A. It. Cadle, Mrs. Mark Blodgett, Mrs. Elwyn Cra ven, Mrs. Carl Bales, Mrs. Orville Kurtz, Mrs. Joe Vines, Mrs. Dwight Webb, Mrs. Milton Essig, Mrs. Charles Bilyeu, Mrs. A. B. Starbuck, Mrs. Tracy Staats and Mrs. William Swindells. Mrs. Bollman announced that at the March meeting the club would entertain with a luncheon in honor of Mrs. Harold D. Aurora Club Meets With Mrs. Evans AURORA The Aurora Wo man's club met Wednesday after noon at the home of Mrs. H. D Evans, with Mrs. L. I. Snyder and Mrs. Willis Matthiew assist ing hostess. One guest was pres ent, Mrs. A. L. Stickland of New berg and 25 members answered to roll call. The card party to be spon sored by the Woman's club will be held In the Knights of Pythias hall, Friday night, February 23. The program for the afternoon consisted of a report on "For eign Trade on the Pantry Shelf," by Mrs. GeorKe Zterl or nH a book review, "Greatest English Classic" by Mrs. John Kraus, and a poem by Mrs. G. W. Kraus. The next meeting will be at the home of Mrs. Fred Dental, Febru ary 21. Lent Observation Starts, St. Louis ST. LOUIS The last pre Lenten card party waa held Sun day night. February 4, In the St. Louis parish hall. There were 22 tables of "500" in play. Prizes were awarded to Bill Biesell. Jo seph Rubens. Mrs. J. Beckers, Mrs. Era DuBois and Mrs. Helen Manning. Lenten services started here Wednesday, February 7, with blessed ashes being distributed to the congregation after the bene diction. Services will be every Wednes day and Friday night at T:S0.
