While early declines running to a point or so were chipped down at the close, few -Issues were able to emerge with pins signs. Dealings were inconsequential throughout, transfers of 437,950 shares being the smallest for any full session since Dec. 4. The to tal compared with .638.720 last Friday. ' The Associated Press av- erase of 60 stocks was off .1 of a point at 49.6. ' The list was no worse , than mildly Irregular at the start. In ability of the steel group to pro gress, however, soon ledvto a slip on in other departments. From then on the struggle was more or less a losing one. Among losers were US Steel, Bethlehem, Yonngstown Sheet, General Motors, Chrysler. Sears Roebuck, Douglas Aircraft, East ern Air Lines, Westinghouse. J. C. Penney and Standard Brands. Loft was a relatively active gainer of a point. Others on top at the finish were Union Carbide, Montgomery Ward, National Bls tuit. Consolidated Edison and preferred issues of Standard Gas t Electric.
