Leo A. Boelens, 107$ Larmer avenue, has been selected by the army air corps for enlistment as a flying cadet of the class begin ning December 30, according, to word received here by Sergeant Gimpelson. Upon enlistment be will be sent to the Allan Hancock College of Aeronautics, Santa Ma ria, Calif. ) After three months training there he will, if found suited as a military pilot, be ad mitted to Randolph Field. Texas. Sergeant Gimpelson said that he had received word from Lteu tenant Colonel H. D. Bagnall, Portland recruiting officer, that there are 400 openings for army flying cadets for each of the next three classes which begin in Feb ruary, March and May. Civilians as well as enlisted men of the army are eligible for these ap pointments, Gimpelson pointed out. Information can be obtained from him at the army recruiting office in the postoffice building. T Prorrams; "Christmas Broadcast" " By Grant Grade Players ' Is 'First Twas the week before Christ mas, and as early as yesterday Sa lem schools . inaugurated it with Christmas programs. Grant grade school, with a Christmas Broadcast" that began at 1:16 yesterday afternoon, had the distinction of being the first unit of the city school system to stage a Yuletide program, while senior high with its annual home coming schedule, ' and . Richmond, Leslie, Highland and Parrish will wind up the week's festivities with programs Thursday after noon. ; Other schools which held pro grams yesterday Included Engle wood, during a 1:30 p.m. assem bly, and Richmond, with a Parent Teacher association and school Christinas program last night. Ben nett will make his first .appear ance before the entire Salem hih school student body when he takes the platform as the princi pal speaker for the annual home coming exercises Thursday after noon. Paul Bollman as assistant host ess. This was the annual Christmas party and an exchange of gifts was held during the afternoon.
