Klamath county, to Willamette points, -were an nounced - here Thursday by Or tnond R. Bean, state utilities com missioner. The new rates will be come effective Immediately. Farmers, ol the Malln district heretofore - hare been forcer to pay rather high freight rates on these products due to the absence of Joint through rates. Malln Is located on the Great ' Northern railway which does 'not operate In the Willamette valley. The new rates, were adopted following; conferences of Malln shippers, Bean, and'Southern Pa cific railroad traffic officials. Bean said special authority had been granted the Great Northern and Southern Pacific to publish the new rates immediately. Okehed by Board The Salem library board yester day accepted a low bid of $S7t by Jones and Hayes tor painting and redecorating work to be done on the Interior and exterior of the public library. Of the 11 bids, 11760 was the highest. Specifications for-the job were furnished to potential bidders ser ersl weeks ago, and called for re painting and making weather proof portions of the outside of the building, as well as painting and redecorating the main read ing room, the children's room, and other parts of the structure. . The walls and ceilings of the reading rooms are to be painted white or light cream, and mould ings and, other woodwork In the children's room la likewise to be brightened. The work Is expected to begin lmediately, and to be fin ished shortly before the first of the year. Lyle P. Bartholomew was engaged by the board to su pervise the work of the success ful contractor. Nixon Proposes New State Park A proposal by Earl K. Nixon, director of the state department of geology and mineral industries, that a newly-discorered petrified forest In Harney county, be des ignated as a state park, has been referred to the state highway com mission. Nixon's proposal originally was filed with the state board of con trol. He said the area contained 80 acres and that the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, DC, pro nounced specimens among the most perfectly preserred samples of this type of material.
