S.-fly-E. J. Schefter, owner of the Portland baseball club, said tonight the Hollywood Stars paid flS.OOO for William J. "Bill Sweeney, Port land manager the past four years. Schefter. said he did not hold Sweeney to his 1940 contract with Portland because he "thought it was such a wonderful chance for him. A new manager for the Portland team probably will not be named until the minor league meeting December 4, ft and at Cincinnati, he said. Sweeney was one of the most popular managers in Portland's baseball history and lost, none of his popularity when his team fin ished in the cellar last season.
