signed a proclamation designating
the week of July 21 to 28 as "Sa
lem Salad Week."
"Oar city is justly proud that ft
is a large market for most salad
ingredients ... both fresh fruits
and vegetables produced in the
area surrounding Salem," the
mayor stated. "Most of these
fruits and vegetables are now in
season and are both plentiful and

and again on the back of the hand
while giving conditioning tablets

guest of her son-in-law and daugh
ter, Lieut, and Mrs. Frank B.
Thrailkill. Mrs. Fortin is driving
up to the. springs each day for
treatments.

Dies of Infection
AURORA -Mrs. Hattie Gloss,
living north of Aurora, died Mon
day at a Portland hospital from
the effects of a scratch from a

Paralysis Victim
Back From South
Partly Recovered
TALBOT Virgil Calavan re
turned home Monday from Warm
Springs, Ga., where he has been
for the past several months re
ceiving treatments for infantile
paralysis which he contracted
while- attending Oregon State col
lege. He was stricken with the
disease September 26, 1937.
Virgil is the son of J. M. Cala
van. He graduated from Talbot
grade school in 1932 and Jeffer
son high school in 1936. He is
able to get around with the aid of
crutches.
