Polk County Club Meets at Suver Plans Booth for County , Fair at Monmouth; " 90 Attend SUVER The Polk County Fed eration ot Women's clnb met at Helmlck park all day Thursday with the Valley View club as hosts. About 90 women were pres ent from all parts of the county. A dinner was served. Mrs. C. F. Gregg of Perrydale presided at the business meeting. Mrs. Dell Tedrow led the singing. An invi tation was extended for members to attend the state federation meeting to be. held in Independ ence In October. . . Plana were made to h a t e a booth at the county fair at Mon mouth. Mrs. Alma Dempsey con ducted group activities during the remainder of the afternoon. Kester, Mrs. John Heffley. Mrs. Roy Smnh, Salem; Mrs. Ed Larsen, Alpine, and Mrs. Maurice Dodson,'Gleneden. Funeral Service Held for Rowley D A T T O N Funeral services were held at 3 p. m. Monday at Macy's chapel In McMlnnville for J. J. Rowley, 72, a resident of Dayton vicinity since 1891, who died Saturday evening at his home after several years' decline. Rev. F. Ev -Fisher of ' Canby officiated. Burial was in Ever green Memorial park cemetery. Mr. Rowley was born August 1. 1866, In Iowa, and moved with his parents when 10 years of age to Norton. Kan., then to Orleans, Kebr., where on August L ,1888, he married Miss Ida Mason. . He Is survived by his widow, four daughters, IS grandchildren, ' six great-grandchildren and one sister. The daughters are Mrs. Ansel . Lamon. Portland; Mrs. Henry Freshour, Dayton; Mrs. John Hennon, Portland; Mrs Jesse White, Reedsport. The sis ter is Mrs. Ida Helvie of Monterey, Calif. ; , . Granger's News - LIBERTY Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Taylor were honored Friday night when the (range home economics club entertained in observance of their 25th year as grangers. The affair was held on the lawn ot the Taylor home.' Lights were strung among the trees to light the scene and supper, was served al fresco. Mrs. V. A. Building, Erection to Start Soon MEHAMA At the special school meeting held Monday af ternoon 27 voted for the proposed bond Issue and three against. The amount of the bond is $1000, to be used to help build a new school building. An appropriation of $8200 was granted by the works progress administration, to be used for the school. ' Work will be started almost im mediately on this project as the building will be needed In Sep tember. Mrs. Virgil Moorhead and son Roger of Salem, have been visit in; Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Pooler for the past week. Mrs. Pooler and son Allen went back to Salem with Mrs. Moorhead to stay a day or so. Mrs. Jennie Moe, Iva Moe, and Bobby Reid all went to Vancouver Sunday to an annual reunion of the Moe clan. Iva Moe remained in Vancouver for a visit with her sister Mrs. Henry Kornmann, and aunt, Mrs. Merle Eisenhart While out looking at a small stream on the back of his place. Jack Ryland fell and injured his knee. The extent of the Injury is not yet determined. Rye Crass Burns In Suver Fire SUVER Fire starting against the sickle on a combine being operated by Vincent Carter dam aged the combine badly and burn ed a large acreage of stubble and some sacked rye grass Friday afternoon about 2 o'clock on the James estate which is rented by Mr. Carter. The fire also burned over a cor ner ot the DeArmond pasture. Many people thought It was a crew burning dry grass along the railroad right-of-way so very few came to fight the flames which spread rapidly. E. E. DeArmond . started work on his new house Monday. It is reported both his ankles are quite seriously crippled. Mrs. F. W. Leonhart and two children left Saturday for Beloit, Kans., where she was called by the serious illness of a daughter. A 10-pound son was born Tues day morning to Mr. and Mrs. Har old Lelth. It is their first child. Mrs. Leith and baby are at the Dr. Victor home for the present A daughter was born Friday, July 14, to Mr. and Mrs. Euclid Gagnor (Etheloy Susee). This" is their second child. While waiting at the dock for the Albacore, to land, they witnessed the explosion which de stroyed the boat and threw Mr. Turner 20 feetout Into the wa ter. Mr. Turner and Mr. Williams were owners of the boat, the larg est privately4 owned one on the bay. The Willamina party was thankful not to be Involved In the disaster. The foci of interest includes: the Golden Gate exposition; Crater Lake, Mt Lassen volcanic area, lava beds, Sacramento fruit and vegetable canneries, orange orchards and rice fields ; Lake Tahoe and Donner summit of Si - erra, the Mother Lode and placer gold mine belt. Old Monterey and Monterey bay, Yosemite national park, the "Redwood Empire." .. Travel will be private automo biles owned and driven by stu dents. Selected tourist cabins have been reserved for accommo dations. - A special cook will pre pare the meals. Six term hours of college cre dit., the regular "load" for a four weeks post session may be earned in geography and geology. Ad vanced students may earn upper division credit. Dr. Carls in Charge The trip Is in charge of Dr. J. Norman Carls, director and in structor. He has had experience as student and as assistant direc tor of similar field studies con ducted from Illinois State Normal university, Bloomlngton, III., and from Clark university, Worcester, Mass. Miss Dora Schetfskey, a super visor of teacher training, will be social adviser. She has accompa nied field studies from State Teachers' college. Valley City, N. D. A travel library of 140 volumes is being taken to augment study. All expenses are' paid by the 32 students taking the trip. One week of study at school precedes the start and one week at close of the session will be spent in the classrooms after returning, to sum up the material gathered, and for final examinations. Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Hewitt and party of Roseville, Calif., came the farthest. Three sons of the pioneer couple were present: Matthew, Jasper and Horry Hewitt. Others attending were: From Portland, Dr. and Mr. Earl Ab bott, Dr. and Mrs. Henry Hewitt, Mr. and Mrs. F. B. Travis, Dr. and Mrs. Walter H. Becker, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Stoutenburg; from Salem, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Hewitt. Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Thornton and son Leo, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hewitt. Mrs. Alta Branson: Dr. and Mrs, L. L. Hewitt and Kenneth H.
