Brides ol
Revealing Plans
For
' - Plans are being revealed this week by brides who have
chosen June, the traditional month for, weddings.
On Saturday night Miss EUzabeth Clement, daughter of
Dr. and Mrs. L. O. Clement, will be married to Mr. Ellson
Thomas Barnett of Astoria, ghe will be given away by her
father. The ceremony will be read by Rev. L. Irwin Williams
in !the gardens of the Clement home. Miss Edith Clement
will arrive from New York in time to act as her sister's maid
of honor, and Mr. Walter Klundt of Corvallis will be best
man for Mr. Barnett. -
The bride's two nieces, the Misses Dolores and Norma
Jean Clement, will be the junior attendants.
Miss Clement is a graduate of Willamette university and
of Julliard school of music in New York. She is a member
of Delta Phi. Mr. Barnett is, a graduate of University of
Washington. The couple plans a short wedding trip after
which they will both attend summer session at Oregon State
college.' ' V'
. ,. ' Miss Sarham to Wed
Miss Barbara Barham, daughter of Mrs. B. F. Russell,
will marry Mr. Frank Tabor of Rainier at a quiet wedding
in Portland tomorrow. They will be married by Judge J. W.
Crawford, and. the bride will be unattended.
Miss Barham is well known in musical circles of Salem,
having attended Willamette university and taught music In
the Salem schools. She has been teaching at Rainier, where
the couple will make their home.
. , . Choose Next Sunday
Several weddings have been set for next Sunday, June
18, by Salem girls or those who will wed Salem men.
Miss Anna Mae Unrath, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest
Unrath of Roseburg, is to be married to Mr. Harold Hoyt of
La Grande on June 18 in Roseburg. Although her plans have
not yet been revealed, several Salem folk will be guests as
she has many friends here. Both Miss Unrath and Mr. Hoyt
were popular Willamette university students.
Miss Frances Berger, daughter of Mrs. Frances Berger,
will become the bride of Mr. John Irvin, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Lawrence Irvin of Calgary, Canada, at a ceremqny read by
Rev. Guy Drill at the First Christian church at 4 o'clock
on June 18.
Miss Katheryn Sharpnack will be the maid of honor, and
Mr. Roland Wirt will be best man.
A reception for the immediate family and bridal party
is planned for the home of the bride's mother, following the
ceremony.
Miss Eleanor Barth has chosen June 18 as the date for
her wedding to Mr. Austin Haddock of Klamath Falls which
will be solemnized at the Reformed-Evangelical church.
Rev. E. Horstman will perform the ceremony. Miss
Barth's cousin, Miss Corrine Borst of Portland, will attend
her as maid of honor. Mr. James Haddock will be his brother's
best man.
A reception is planned for immediately following the
ceremony. Miss Barth is a graduate of Oregon normal school
and University of Oregon and attended Willamette university
where she was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha. Mr. Haddock
attended Oregon State college.
Friday Wedding
Miss Doris Lundeen, daughter of Mrs. Golden Kite of
Gridley, Calif., and granddaughter of Mr, and Mrs. M. H.
Standifer of Salem, will be married to Mr. L. Steele Shuford,
son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Shuford of Blackstone, North
Carolina, on Friday. Rev. Arno Q. Weniger will perform the
ceremony which will be held at the home of the bride's uncle
and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Bones.
Miss Lundeen is a graduate of Salem high school and
has been in the administrative offices of the school for
several years. Mr. Shuford attended school in North Carolina
and. has lived for several years in Salem. The couple will
reside here.

Veterans' Daughters
Mrs. Ethel Burns of Newberg,

ment in the Elks temple on Tues
day. A three day program Is
arranged with headquarters at
the Senator hotel and all busi

Civil War are expected to spend
some time at the convention and

The concert season, though re
linquishing headlines temporar
ily to student recitals, is not
yet over in Salem, for there is
to be a program of nnusual in
terest on Thursday of this week,
presented by. a group of local
singers, The Salem Civic chorus,
under the able direction of Prof.
E. W. Hobson. The concert will
be given in the American Luth
eran church at :15 o'clock.
Although the group of excel
lent singers has been practicing
regularly for a year, this is the
first appearance in concert, and
it is with a great deal ot inter
est that music lovers are antici
pating the program. The singing
group, now numbering fourteen
voices, is made np of the per
sonnel of the Salem Madrigal
chorus and the Civic Male cho
rus which enjoyed several years
of popularity under Prof. Hob
son's direction. Several addi
tional singera have been added
to the group.
The program will Include all
concert numbers.
Several Important names in
musical circles of Salem are In
cluded among the soloists. Jo
sephine Albert Spaulding wiU
sing several groups including
two numbers by a Salem com
poser. Mary Schnlts Duncan
will play the violin accompani
ment to Deems Taylor's "May
day Carol," sung by the chorus.
The two-piano team of Emery
S. Hobson and Jean Hobson
Rich, which appeared In con
cert this, winter, is on the pro
gram with several numbers. Mrs.
J. A. Sholseth and Miss Ruth
Bedford are also listed as vocal
soloists for the concert.
Miss Bedford is accompanist
for the chorus.

Oldest Couple
Celebrate
Together
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Helenbrand
celebrated their 65th wedding an
nlversary quietly at their bone
on South High street on June 9,
few Salem folk realizing that the
couple are quite unique in bavin
been married in Salem so many
years ago. Few if any other
couples can enjoy this distinction
and that of having been true pio
neers who built western Oregon.
Mrs. Helenbrand, who was Leo
na M. Kimball before her mar
riage, Is now 83. She cams across
the plains with her parents in 'SI
from Illinois. Her father fought In
the war of 1812. Mr. Helenbrand
Is 81 and was only four years old
when his family came around the
Horn from Maine. It took the par
ty six months from New York te
San Francisco, a trip taking but a
few days now.
Mrs. Helenbrand attended Wil
lamette university in 1872 and
1873.
Following their marriage at -a
spot somewhere between Liberty
and Commercial on State street
by Rev. P. S. Knight, the couple
resided In Salem. After three years
they homesteaded in Tillamook
county and owned a great deal ot
property around Hebo where tbeir
only living daughter still resides.
In 1913 Mr. and Mrs. Helen
brand moved to Salem and have
been here ever since.
Mrs. Helenbrand is very proud
of her father's bible which she
owns and wnich contains names
of marriages and births dating
from 1740.
