No sales by Oregon growers of either 1S3S or older hops were reported and no new contracts for future deliveries were reported during the period. Growers were asking 24 to 25 cents per pound for . 1338 top quality hops covered by federal loans, but demand from domestic dealers and industries waa slow. 1037 hops remained . nominally around T to 8 cents" per pound, net to growers, while older growths were not quoted. Tbe general market situation appear ed fully steady but with trading and movement at a standstill. Washington markets were also quiet but steady with no sales reported in either the Yakima valley or western Washington producing districts during the past week. Quiet in California California hop markets were extremely dull and reflected slow demand from the trade and light offerings from growers. Ideas of buyers and sellers continued unusually far apart and there were no sales either of 1938 or loder growths In the three main producing areas. With practi cally all remaining supplies cov ered by government loans, grow ers were asking 24 to 25 centd per pound for these holdings. In the meantime, the trade generally was filling current needs from stocks and were awaiting further market devel opments before placing large or ders. Stocks were being placed in transit prior to California tax assessment at March 6, but- rep resented movement on contracts. Interest In contracting 1939 sup plies slackened and no transac tions were reported in either the Sacramento valley or coastal counties. Growers generally were unwilling to contract "seedless' bops at less than 23 to 25 cents while regular growths were being offered at 20 to 22 cents per pound. Trade ideas wer. re ported as somewhat under these asking prices. The New York hop market continued quiet but steady dur ing the week with prices un changed. Some new inquiry was present for 1030 contracts on do mestic crop. Trade otherwise was dull and consisted mainly of shipments to brewers on past contracts. - Foreign hops contin ued strong with prices steady and unchanged. February 22, domes tic 1038 crop were quoted to the trade at New York at-28 to 3d cents, and 1037 crop at 18 to 20 cents per pound.
