When last Saturday morning we cluttered nn this space with the statement, "it would not surprise us If Mr. Gill's Beavers snack over a win on the high-powered Ducks," we by no means meant to infer a 19-polnt shellacking as actually occurred. Nor did we en vision the complete rout, which the final score did not truly pic- tare, of tbe Oregons. After winning 10 straight in comparatively easy fashion, bow- ever, the high-flying Ducks were overdue for It. On tbe other side. the Oregon Staters were Just as overdue to show a splash of the power Mr. Gill's cage clubs bare a habit of showing. The Beavers were due tor a hot night and they reallv had it. The smashing defeat la no re flection on tbe Oregon team's championship ability. What happened to Hobby's hoon gang happens right along to the best of champion. There come dava In any sport where nothing win work right. Take a look at the Yankee, for instance. Thou eh world champs for tbe past three years, there have been days when tbe cellar-dwelling clubs have handed .them one-aided trouncing. Come to think of It. there are days when even we can't lay np a cent. How about yon? Nevertheless, tbe defeat put the Indelible "must" finger on tbe Webfoots. From here on out. in cluding this Friday's face-off with Gill's rampaging Orangemen, the Dueks must produce or else that coast chamoionshin playoff won't be staged In tbe McArthur Icloo after all. Another loss to the Bea . vers and Oregon would go Into the Washington series tied up with the Huskies, providing Idaho drops both games to Washington. Missionaries Gome Tonight Whitman; Bearcats Nearly Even in NW Standings; Both Need Games TENTATIVE LINEUPS WILLAMETTE WHITMAN Eherly F BuTlock White F . L. Pepin Anton C :.. Gentry Bkopil G.. Heidenreicb Quesseth G Webb Game Time: 8 o'clock. It begins tonight! Meaning, of course, the annual Whitman - Willamette basketball series. And, as usual, tbe circuit championship, depends to a large extent on the outcome of this two game tussle between Nig Bor leske's mighty mites from eastern Washington and Happy Howard Maple's mid - Willamette valley Bearcats. Northerners Trail Bearcats Whitman enters the series with one more win and one more loss than Willamette, the Missionar ies having won 10 and lost 2 to the Methodists' 9 wins and 1 loss. A series sweep by Whitman would give Mr. Borleske another North west conference flag; a split ot the double-counter series would make it necessary for the. Bear cats to win their two remaining games with Pacific to cop the ti tle; and a series sweep by Wil lamette would place the Bearcats in a position where only one win from Pacific would be necessary to insure the championship. Heralded as the tiniest quint Borleske has tutored at Whitman in his 25 years, the Missionaries rely on speed, aggressiveness and dead-eye basket tossing. The starting five averages a little less than six feet per man, but is one of the fastest ever fielded by Whitman. Tiny Quintet Is Fast Glen Bullock, last year's con ference scoring champ with 113 points, is again leading the Whit man scorers and has his eye on the '39 title. He is sided at for ward by Larry Pepin, one of the Pepin twins of the club, who is not far behind Bullock in the scoring column. Arnol Gentry, captain, is the club's fiery little pivoter, while Paul Webb and Hal Heldenreich, both veterans, work at the guards. Maple will start his regular quint, that has hung up 19 wins In 23 starts for the season, includ ing 9 ot 10 conference battles. It will feature the high scoring "Wild Bill'' Anton in the keyhole slot, sided by smooth working Howard Eberly and aggressive Bob White at the forwards; and with Otto "Scooter" Skopil and Cecil Quesseth working the back court. . . A preliminary, at 7 o'clock, will feature, the Bearkittens against the city league Paper makers.
