' ar rum Runs 12 Days Spectacular Drama About Noted Bad Man Took 2 Years to Make Darryl F. Zantick's production "Jesse James," showing this last week at the Grand theatre has been beld oyer by popular demand until Wednesday, making a 12 day run. This 20th Century-Fox technicolor epic, which was two years In the making, received a wildly enthusiastic welcome from audiences all week. It is one of the most spectacular dramas ever produced on the screen. Two Tears In Making Although Hollywood has fre quently spent as much as two years Introducing a movie, nev er before have the fruits of their labor been so apparent as they are In "Jesse Janes." It is undoubt edly Darryl F. Zanuck's greatest production, and that tribute, paid to the man who gave us "In Old Chicago" and "Alexander's Rag time Band' is considerable praise Indeed: Power's Acting Landed The performance of Tyrone Power in the title role is certainly one of the outstanding acting con tributions of the year. So perfect ly does he portray the almost leg endary figure of Jesse James, that after a time you are com pletely convinced the famous out- law Is once more roaming the hills of the west. Other brilliant characterira tions are presented by Henry Fon da in the role of Frank James. and Nancy Kelly as Zerelda, Jesse's wife. Randolph Scott is . splendid as Marshall Wright and a fine supporting cast do their bit down to the last man. Henry King '.directed the picture from screen play by Nunnally Johnson, who was also associate producer on the film. "Stand Up and right,, co-starring Wallace Beery and Robert Taylor for the first time, comes to the screen of the Elsinore theatre today. ' - Unique In that It combines au thentic historical background .of a period ana locale nitnerto un touched in motion pictures with the sort of rapid-fire pace that made the Westerns of silent days so perennially popular, "Stand Up and Fight" seems likely to be the forerunner of a cycle. of stories of that kind. Taylor's Role Good Taylor's role of the bankrupt young Maryland aristocrat shang haied Into going to work for the stage coach line is happy choice for it gives him an opportunity to combine romantic appeal with the he-man, type of characterisation which won him laurels in "A Tank at Oxford" and "The Crowd Roars.' Beery's role of the hard boiled, often unscrupulous mana ger of the Bullet Line is another natural, a typical Beery part played to the tilt and comparable with any of his finest work. Florence Rice Appeals For Florence Rice the feminine lead is a sure augury of great sac- cess to come for she handles this, her first major assignment, with a sure touch and appealing charm Never has she been photographed to greater advantage than in the hoop-skirts and bonnets of the 1850's. The Broadway hit written by Arthur Kober and produced by Marc Connelly, which won salros of praise from critics and fans alike, retains in its film adapta tion its original effects of comedy and sentiment, while characteri sation, dialogue and action are greatly enhanced by the elaborate scope of the camera. The story Is simple but wholly human in Its understanding. It traces the experiences of a New York stenographer, played by Miss Rogers, who, during a two week vacation at a summer re sort, suddenly falls head-over-heels In love with Fairbanks, a. student of law working as a waiter at the resort, where t . spotlight is focused on their hec tie romance, their quarrels and misunderstandings, and the ulti mate fulfilment of their love. iiiiUi 7 'i m- -w-v-v-' I J Fh " a Miisatieifrr J v i t " Hit So. a--;.- t yy -n-. . :.
