United States, Frank Durkhoff,
retired J. C. Penney store man
ager from Michigan, has arrived
in Salem with Mrs. Durkhoff and
their two daughters and intends
to make their future home here.
Durkhoff has spent the past
two winters in California and had
visited Salem briefly two years
ago. He says that he has consist
ently heard Oregon referred to as
the state least hit by the depres
sion, with Salem the city least
conscious of business ills.
Arrived here, he met Claude
Talmage, 1765 Center, whom he
knew it Ritzville, Wash., 19 years
ago while Durkhoff was with the
J. C. Penney store. This was the
first meeting of the men in that
period.

Citizens of Salem and the
community are urged to make
contributions to .the Chinese ci
vilian relief fund for the war
and flood stricken thousands in
China. The national American
Red Cross chapters throughout
the United States have promised
to raise $1,0 00.0 CO tor the relief
fund. The quota reached to date
is $34,588.
There are 190 Red Cross chap
ters in the Pacific northwest and
69 of these have achieved' their
