Slayton Happy at Arrival of new 500-Gallon-Mimite Pumper Added -To Equipment Volunteer Firemen STAYTON Stayton was all astir with excitement and pride Wednesday over the arrival of the new 500-galIon a minute pumper, which was given a 6-hour test Wednesday by representatives from the underwriters laboratories corpora tion. . " Mr. White, engineer for the rating bureau of the national board ot Fire underwriters, Mr.o Lawton, manager of the Howard-Cooper Corporation, .: from which the engine was purchased, and H. White, salesman for the corporation, were present at the examination and found the pump er completely satisfactory, r Tfre Stayton Volunteer fir de partment was organized In 1887 and is the oldest actlre service organization here.' ' 4 - ' The bucket brigade was the method of fire fighting in the old days. The yolunteer firemen carried the water In buckets and poured it onto the fire 1 to ex tinguish the flames.'. In 1890 the first piece of fire fighting equipment was purchas ed from Albany. It was a hand pumper, which required 20 men to operate it. San Francisco had purchased it in 1852 at a cost of over 11500. : It is now one of the oldest pieces of fire appar atus on the Pacific coast, and Is exhibited each year in the par ade of the annual Sauanr . spree. a celebration, which the fire de partment sponsors here, , and which has greatly helped make it possible to purchase the new equipment. . s' -' Chemical Tank Next In 1900 the city purchased a chemical tank. A- while later the city put In. a municipal water system and hydrants and pur chased 1000 feet of two and one half inch hose and several 2- wheel hose carts to carry the -hose. This outfit was pulled . by the fireman. This wtfa a much more efficient method of fire fighting. In 1924 the Fire De partment purchased - tLe present siren, an Improvement over the old bell alarm In 1932 the city purchased a four-wheel trailer hose wagon, which was pulled behind a car. This was found to save a lot of time and energy In going to fires. Two years ago -members of the fire department decided that an even better fire fighting appar atus was needed, so they started making plans for a means of raising funds for this equipment and evolved tha San tiam Spree, which raised ; $2000 , for equip ment. The city council voted to allow $1500 toward this cause, and the Howard Cooper Corpora tion were ordered to build the 500-gallon a minute pumper, which Is mounted on. an 85-horse-power truck. More hose will be purchased soon, A. D. Gardner, Senior, past 80. is the . only charter member of the original volunteers still , do ing active service In the depart ment. A. D. Gardner, Jacob Spa nlol Henry Smith and Joseph Fisher have been among -the outstanding fire chiefs in" the last 50 years. Chris Neltling Is the present efficient chief of the department. Revival Campaign in Progress at Hopewell; School Event Tonight HUBBARD An Interesting re rival meeting is in progress at tbe Hopewell Mennonite church, two miles east of Hubbard on the Needy road. Evangelist George Miller, of Milford, Ne braska is in charge. The pupils of the White school will put on a free entertain ment on Friday night. A pie social will be held after the entertainment.
