Major Dana Allen Visits old Haunts Army Man Here From China Formerly Worked in Clerk's Office library Receives Notable Volumes "And So Victoria" Seen as Outstanding Book of Current Year Major Dana H. Allen, more than 20 years ago an employe in the county clerk's office, returned there yesterday for a short visit with County Clerk Grant Boyer. Major Allen, who was recent ly attached to the lath infantry in Tientsin, China, is visiting sev eral days in Salem -and Hubbard before- proceeding' to Ardmore, Okla., where he will be assigned to duty with the Oklahoma na tional guard. Born in Silverton, Major Allen was employed in the county clerk's office here in 1907. He served for ten years with the old third regiment of the Oregon na tional guard, an outfit which lat er became the 16 2d Infantry. The picnic will start at 10 o'clock, with a picnic dinner at noon. Those who come will bring their food baskets; coffee will be furnished. Office Manager Dotson estimated last night that there were about 1000 listed jobs still open. Demands for seasonal help in hop yards, are being met rapidly, he pointed out, both through the employment office and through the signing of workers directly with hop growers. Three or four days was pre dicted as the length of time re quired before all hop picking will be filled, workers are being ad vised at the office to sign up im mediately if they plan to work in the hop fields. Approximately 100 wood cut ting jobs are open to those who wish longer term employment than that provided during hop rseason. Dunne Heads for Mejet at j Capital CORVALLIS, Aug. lS-MV- Donald Kohler Snd Miss Nagine Quigley, both of Corrallis, were Injured when an automobile in which they were riding collided with another driven by Mrs. W. A. Winnitord at a street inter section. Physicians expressed concern over tne condition of Kohler, who remained unconscious for several hours after the crash. He was recently released from the hospital after being Injured July 29 in an accident near Albany which resulted in the death of Ellen Mosier of Corvallis. Miss Quigley was less seriously Injured.
