Crcsa, Friiay II;nur.-, ly 21, i::7 1 - Capitol Costs : Are Revealed Total to Date $363,932, six per Cent Listed Administrative Almost exactly per cent of the total expenditure in connec tion with the state capitol re construction up to May 18 had been administrative costs, state department re cords showed Thursday. The total outlay was $363t932,$7 of which 121,780.26 was administrative cost. This in cluded the item of the scale mod el of the new capitol. Work on the capitol building started last September although operations of the capitol recon struction commission were to pro gress for several - months previ ously.' The total appropriation for the - capitol construction, in cluding the federal grant, was $2,500,000. The largest item of adminis trative cost up to May 18 inc lud ed salaries for the executive sec retary, clerk of -the works and other clerks and stenograpners. Alton ' Bassett. ' executive secre tary, received 14993.40. He baa received a salary of $300 a month but this was-increased to $350 at the last meeting of the com mission. Payments of architects fees, tests, etc.. werer Trowbridge, Livingston and Francis Kealey. New York archi tects, payment on contract, $49, 811.38; revision of plans and special drawings $1661.56. Portland architects, payments on contract, $24,905.69; architects travel ex pense $2184.82, tests and borings $516.69. i Artiste Partly Paid Payments on contract, involv ing murals and decorative paint ings aggregated $3541.50, with other payments of $2796.40 for sculptor and carvings and for models for certain bronze work. Construction payments on con tracts totalled $241,218.79 and other costs $1334.92. The building will not be com pleted until August, 1938, under the terms of the contract. Wharton Is execu tive secretary to Governor Mar tin. "If democracy Is to succeed in any country it can do so only through the free discussion of all public matters," Wharton remark ed during his Informal talk re garding the press and the gov ernment.
