March 13. P. H. Johnson, long time merchant of Monmouth, has announced that he will sell his stock of stationery, books and variety goods, and probably will retire from active business. He came here from Michigan some 30 years ago, op ened a meat market, later oper ated a book and variety store, also fountain ' service, i and for some years had a furniture agency. He has built and. sold several houses . here. Reports that his store build' lng has been leased for five years to the Skaggs Safeway stores. Johnson, recently .offered the city of Monmouth a block of land 165 x 720 feet lying west of the Oregon Normal school campus In exchange . for sewer assessments totaling $1100. The land would " be. debt free and. taxes paid a P. S Canarissa Foster Buried at Turner TURNER, March 13. Grave side services were held Friday af ternoon at the family plot in Twin Oak cemetery for Mrs. Canarissa Vaughn Foster, with Rev.- Bruce Groseclose of the Turner Metho dist church officiating. She was a resident of; near Turner and a member of the Methodist church over 50 years ago. . She leaves two sons. Anson A. and Lester H. Foster of Portland. where she passed away at an ad vanced age. Three brothers sur vive, O. W. and Frank Vaughn of Linn county and Charles of Aumg- vllle.
