Memorial Banquet Served at Turner TURNER, Jan: 21 A well-ar ranged - four-course banquet was served Saturday night at the Torner Memorial home, with Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Gilstrap hosts. The occasion was the annual " observ ance of the birthday anniversary of the late Mrs. Judith Turner, as requested by her,- daughter, the late Mrs. Cornelia A. Davis. The reception was held in the fireplace room : In the - Turner library, adjoining the memorial home. For the banquet, Rer. n. J. Reasoner of Salem was toast- master. A covered dish dinner was served at noon. A business meet- in a was held in the afternoon and the officers for church and Sun day school were elected. Jan. 21 The town i of Hubbard celebrated the 'paying 1 off of the last bond of the city's Indebtedness Wednesday night in the Hubbard high school 'gym. with 400 persons enjoyinjf the cel ebration banquet.' . ' The town orchestra played sev eral musical numbers and Mayor Garfield Voget, Hubbard, made a welcoming speech after which Am erica was subg and prayer was given by Rev. N. 8. Hauk. C. Smith of St. Paul sang two numbers af ter which the Turkey dinner was served, in charge of the Federat ed church roild. After the dinner Mayor Voget gave a brief history of the foundi tag of Hubbard by J. T. Hubbard 90 years ago and the development of the city, then introduced Jos eph : Carson, mayor of Portland, who gave the main address. Mayor Carson Speaks. . Mayor , Carson stated that he hoped other cities of Oregon; In cluding Portland, would foUow the example of Hubbard, that is, don't give up until the Joh is done. - Others speakers were R. Civic Club's Benefit at Dayton Draws Good Crowd DAYTON, Jan. 21 About 125 people enjoyed the Civic club ben efit 7 o'clock dinner served Mon day night at the Civic clubrooms. Two skits, one by the Civic club women and one by high school, and lap dancing were given, fol lowed by dancing to music fur nished by Mr. and Mrs. Mullkens of McMlnnvllle. ar.m Armstrongs on Visit UNIONVALE, Jan.. In the past 10 years, Hubbard has paid oft a grand total of 125,344.94 in prin cipal and interest in addition to fi nancing various improvements and conducting - the regular - business of. the city. j In 1927. the city of Hubbard owed: water bonds, 111,000; sew er', bonds, U.O 0 0 ; outstanding interest-bearing . warrants. ' 1,311, 57, or a total bt 1 8.3 8.57. . : 'Between January 1,. 1927, and January .1. 1937, the entire S1S, 3CI.57 debt was paid off plus' in-; terest which amounted to 18,978.- j f Abeorba Bank Loss Too '. j I In addition . to these expendi tures the city had to Absorb a loss bt S2.C4S .79 at the time the Hub bard bank failed. When the. bank closed its deors the city had on deposit 15881.75. The city receiv ed 55 per cent of this in the course of the bank's liquidation. . In -the past 10 years Hubbard has built a new. steel water tower at a cost of $4400 and a well and pump costing , 1 22 50.
