Dee. 24Monday Bight the Altar society held a regular meeting at which time captains were appointed to head the annual membership drive which will begin immediately. Mrs. 'Amelia Van Erman and Mrs. John Dolzer will be in charge of one side and Mrs. William Ker ber and Mrs. Barbara Boedig heimer the other. Plans were made for another series of five card parties which will be ended before lent, with - the first set for Tuesday, Jan nary 5. Prizes will be awarded for high scores ' at each . party with cash awards made at the close of .the series for the aggre gate high score. : Following the meeting, card " playing was enjoyed and ended by the exchange of gifts among members of the society. Games Are Cancelled For Womlburn Quint; Will Play Gervais WOODBURN. Dec. 24 Two basketball games scheduled for the Buldogs of Woodburn high school which were to be played during the Christmas holidays, - have been canceled. These- games were the game with Commerce high school of Portland which was chduled for December 30 on the Woodburn floor and the game with Ashland high school which was to have been played here De cember 31. . The Woodburn team will how ever, play Tuesday. December 29. t Gervais when they play a re turn game with Gervais high school. ' The Bulldogs will open their pay with the Willamette Valley - League January 5 when they will meet the West Linn Lions on the Woodburn floor. Hilf iker Home Is Scene School Fete NORTH HOWELL, Dec. 24 Mrs. Nell Hilfiker was home hos tess Tuesday night to a group of North Howel school girls includ ing Virginia Mcllwain, Florence Pickens, Mary Lou Wiesner, Til lie Mayte and Mary Seism. After dinner the group drove to Hazel Green schoolhouse and enjoyed the Christmas program. Wednesday afternoon the North Howell pupils presented a pro gram of music and readings at the schoolhonse. Thursday after noon the pupils had their Christ mas party after which vacation will be in order until January 4. Mr. and Mrs. K. D. Silverton Woman Nears 95th Birthday But Handles All Her Own Christmas Shopping, Greetings SILVERTON, Dec 24 On De cember 26 Mrs. Marcus L. Latham of Silverton wil observe her 95 th birthday, anniversary. She has Just finished her own Christmas chop ping and has sent out scores of notes bearing holiday greetings to the many friends she has made down through the years. Mrs. Latham still does her own housekeeping, maintaining her own apartment in the home of her eon and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Latham of Silverton. She is an Inveterate reader and enjoys listening to talks and ad dresses over the radio. Mrs. Latham . was born Mercia Weaver, December 26, 1441, In Pennsylvania. When very small girl, she moved with her parents School in Recess At Independence INDEPENDENCE. Dee. 24 In dependence high school closed Wednesday afternoon for the Christmas holidays. The girls' league presented a program in the gymnasium. A Christmas play was featured with the high school or chestra furnishing the music. The faculty and where they are to apend their vacation: Principal and Mrs. Robinson and Bobby will go to Mapleton to spend the holidays with Mr. Robinson's par ents. While there he expects to spend his time fishing. Coach and Mrs. Loren Mort, ac companied by Mrs. Mort's parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Irvine, will motor to San Francisco to see the new bridge; other members ex pect to spend the days at their various homes; Miss Helen West at Seaside; Miss Edith Bear at Albany; Miss Anita Boley at Sa lem; Mr. and Mrs. H. Latham, young anion soldier, home on a furlough, recovering from wounds received in the Civil war. They observed their 70th wedding anniversary in 1934. Mr. Latham died later In that year. In 1882 Mr. and Mrs. Latham moved to Nebraska,- in 1903 to Idaho. In 1918 they went to Cal ifornia. For the next few years they divided their time between California and Salem. They mov ed to Silverton about 10 years ago. Mrs. Latham is the- mother of three children, H. B. Latham of Silverton; Marc Latham of Oak land, Calif., and Mrs. J. D. Goble of Los i Angeles. Funeral Is Held For Aged Matron LEBANON, Dee. 24 FuneralJ services for Mrs. Christie Carpen ter, 79, who died December 20 at her' home - at Cascadia, were held at the N. C. Lowe mortuary Wednesday morning ' with burial in the Shedd cemetery. . . Mrs.. Carpenter was a native of Indiana where she was born on March 23, 1857. She was married to Joseph Carpenter in 1882 and in 1888 they came to Oregon and lived in Lebanon until 1907 when they moved to Cascadia where she has since lived. Mr. Carpen ter died several years sgo. She Is survived by two daugh ters, Inez Jincks of Foster and Lois Walker of Portland, one son Denxil Carpenter of Foster and six grandchildren.
