Moffett Is New Mayor Several Changes Rumored in Appointive Positions After January 4 . SILVERTON. Dec. 24 On Jan nary 4, Mayor E. W. Carver will turn over. the city affairs to may or-elect W. H. Moffett, Mayor Garrer, who has steered Silverton affairs through the worst econom ie depression the city has ever ex. perienced, will retire to private life. He served the city as council man for eight years and as mayor for four. He urges the people of Silverton to stand behind their newly elected mayor as thorough ly as they stood behind him dur ing hts terms of office. - While Mayor-elect Moffett has lived at Silverton for a few years and owns a grocery store on Pine street, this will be his first city office at Silverton. I C.r G. Rue, newly-elected city ' treasurer, to succeed M. G. Gun derson, who has held that aff ice for 20 years, la also new as an office holder In city affairs. ' Rue attended high school here, went from Silverton to the World "war, has been an -employe of the Coolidge and McClalne bank for many years and is now president of Silverton's chamber or com - merce. ' Others To Assume Posts , A. W. Green Is the third new member to take an office on Jan uary 4. Mr. Green has made his home here for several years. He was elected to the city council, v . John H. Porter, a native of Sil terton's farming community, also elected to - the council. Is well known not only in Silverton but In the county, having served as commissioner for. a number or years.' C. B. Anderson and George Cusiter were both re-elected 'to aucceeed themselves, Anderson as councilman and Cusiter as re corder. Cusiter came to Silverton 50 years ago last April as book keeper of what later became known as Fischer Flouring Mill. Judge McMahan of Salem was em- ployed at the mill while Mr. Cus- lter served as bookkeeper. Later Mr. Cusiter purchased a store which he owned and operated for many years. He has served several terma as mayor and councilman at Silverton. This wil be his second consecutive term as recorder at this time. Retiring from the city council will be Dr. C. R. Wilson, who has served eight years, and C. A. Han de, who was named to fill out the unexpired term of Councilman J. Ft Conrad, who retired because of health. Neither one sought re election. Rumors are there will Ha some changes In city officers as the new ir ay or has power to appoint, with the ratification of the council. Of ficers which are thus appointed are city attorney, a position now filled by C. E. Ross of Salem; a member of the Silverton water commission the retiring member being Dr. A. W. Simmons; and the Silverton police force, offices now held by Lloyd Kennedy, chief, and C. E. Hartfort, night officer; city prysisian, now Dr. p. A. Loar, and street commissioner, L. Tates. Junior. Members Piano" Class Are Entertained At Instructor's Home MONMOUTH, Dec. 24 The junior mefbers of Mrs. R. D. El liott's piano class' were enter tained yesterday at a Christmas club meeting In the studio. Each ; member played a memorized solo. Work awards were presented. Warren T. ' Santa Pays Visit For Children of School at Program in Sublimity SUBLIMITY, Dec. 24 The pu pils of the Sublimity schools held their Christmas program Tues day night in the C. F. hall with a large attendance, santa ap peared during the play and after the program presented each child with a present. Wednesday morn ing the pupils enjoyed a Christ mas party with exchange of gifts and school was dismissed until January 4. The teachers, Miss Zorn and Miss Begin will spend the holiday at their homes.
