The OREGON STATESMAN, Saleitf, Oregon, Friday Morning, September 18, 1935 Quiet biit PeFsIgteiit Buying Starts Stocks om j Up ward Trend! PAGE SIXTEEN Steels, Rails Lead Advance Slowness of Trading Only Detracting Factor ' as Average Lifts .4 NEW YORK. Sept. 17-flV Quiet but persistent buying forc es got behind the stock market today and rallied recently depress ed issues fractions to around 2 points. Leading the forward push were selected steels, rails, motors, oils, coppers and specialties. Only the relatirely slowness of trading detracted from the satis faction in brokerage circles over ability of the list to reverse its backward trend. The Associated Press average of 60 issues was up .4 of a point at 67.3 against a decline of .7 the previous day. Transfers totalled 773,370 shares compared with 1,042,412 yesterday. It was the smallest S hour volume since June 29. A few automobile shares took a turn for the, better as most fac tories were 1 expected to start hamming in the next week or so In production of 1937 models. Some trading hestitancy was at tributed to the . cloudy foreign scene. Reflecting the con tined flow of gold, from Paris and the continent to London, sterling whirled up to a new 2-year peak before meeting resistance. The French franc held about even.
