PAGE EIGHT The i OREGON STATESMAN, Salem, Oregon, Sunday Morning, May 24, 1936 Canneries Are Getting Ready Packing Season to Start This Week, Be on Full Blast First of June Salem - canneries have been cleaning house tor the last sev eral days in preparation for the beginning of tbe packing season which will start this week and get Into -full swing by the first of June.1 . . ' At this Eeld, Murdock plant, the rhubarb ran is being cleaned op with asparagus packing in full swing, to" be finished about the end of the month. Starr Fruit products plant will start running goosebetwies this week with last a few Marshal strawberries In prospect. Paulus Brothers and the Hon t cannery are both ready for the start of the season bat will watt until a suf ficient' quantities are delivered to keep their plants In full swing. f ' . Gooseberries Harmed , ' The cold ..rains of last w fTk caused " considerable damage" to th;go06eberry erop. Buyers esti mate that the crop will be reduced by 2 Sl per cent by t h e stormy weather. All gooseberries In ' the district are reported to be - con tracted to the canneries. While the rain did damage to the gooseberry growers, the small damage that was done to the Mar shal strawberries was more than outweighed by benefits that' will result to the crop due to the moist ground. Practically all of the crops are coming into the canneries a week earlier, than last season. Warm weather daring March: and early April helped develop the trait sooner than usual. . , Saving Made Upon action An audit this week of accounts of inspectors in the state. depart ment of agriculture shows changes in the inspection service made by Director S. T.White has effected considerable saving. Under the change, the state was divided into seven districts with a resident inspector in each dis trict and in charge of all depart ments of inspection. The audit shows that for three men, the travel costs for a three month per iod In 1934 was $699.22 and for the' same three-months period in 1935, $250.83. or a reduction in costs of 64 per cent under White's plan. At the same-ttme, the in spection work showed an increase of 3 S. 4 per cent in 1935 over 1934. - . - These figures were presented to the Farmers Union convention at Mt :Aagel early in the week by Director White, who stated that in giving them he wished to make no reflection upon the excellent work, his predecessor had done in the department of agriculture, new tinder -the Meier regime. Shearing Season Its Height . With wool prices still holding at 30 and 31 cents a pound, shearing of sheep in the Willamette valley willle in full swing by the first of the week, growers report. ; Many of the bands have already been sheared, the rest will be com ' pleted as soon as the shearers get around to the. various ranches.
