Chrysler, backed by a boosted dividend and the best first quarter earnings in the history of the com pany, met with- baying support throughout. Other industrial spe cialties and a few rails were also heartened by the continued flow of pleasing industrial news. There were many backward stocks, however, and the closing tone was irregular. Transfers totalled 1,712.710 shares against 2.171,030 in yes terday's relapse. The Associ ated Press arerage fo SO stocks edged up .1 of a point to 60.5. On Thursday this index dropped l.S points in the worst break since July 26. 1934. Shares of Chrysler, pushed up to 100. slipped back and then firmed to close at the top for a pet gain of 2 points. RossmanDpinions Masterly, Report The honor of being adjudged one of 23 Judjrt-s who make a prac tice of "writing masterly opin ions" is paid Judge George Ross man of the Oregon supreme court in an article appearing in the Journal of the American Bar asso ciation. The author, John H. Wig more, dean emeritus of Northwest ern university law school, studied opinions on evidence Law written from 1925 to 132 in 15 states. He writes: "The number of judges habitu ally writing masterly opinions in the various supreme courts, in the period studied, was refreshingly large, and should renew and in crease our respect for the bench." he wrote. "There are of course many able Judges to whom no opportunity fell for writing opinions on the branch of law here surveyed. But honor to whom, honor is due; and It seems appropriate to note the names of those who had the most frequent opportunities to make valuable contributions in their opinions." The only other western Jurist .honored with Judge Rossman is Judge Bluroe of Cyoming. Brooder Opened With 2500 Poults ... TURNER. April 24 The Wal ter Meyers tig turkey brooder was opened for business thLs week, with 2500 poults brought from the hatchery, with a like number to be added soon. Thousands of young turks have been brought direct from incubators to the largo modern broooder in the last five years. Mr. and Mrs. Meyers, once resi dents of near Turner, moved from their turkey ranch between Mar lon and Jefferson last fall to their new home near Perrydale. where a large acreage is devoted to growing crops for feed. They have bad good success in their business; at the peak of the laying season they have 1000 eKZs daily. Their shipments of eggs ad poults go as far as the mid western state. Democrats Lose, Wheeler County Increased registrations for the primary election were reported by Morrow and Wheeler coun ties which reported to the sec retary of state Thursday. Wheel er county reported a loss of five democratic voters. The compari son of registrations for 1934 and for this year follow: Morrow county republicans 1502, compared to 1481 in 1934: democrats 5f ?. compared with 671: totals 2150, compared to 121. "Shearing in the west has been further delayed by very unpropi tiouB weather, heary losses of ear ly shorn sheep having .been suf fered in some sections. "Foreign markets are a bit firmer again. Bradford and the continental markets having done a fair business, more especially In the finer cpunts. Psecegoods Slower "The piecegoods markets are slower, with little in the way of new business reported in an line. Manufacturers are fairly busy still on old orders, against which they are generally well covered. "Mohair is firm. Some buying in Oregon is reported at up to 45 cents for adult." April 24-rP) -The state highway commission tonight followed recommendations ot Eugene and Bend business men and decided to open the Santiam highway summit detour around the snow-blocked McKenzie Pass summit. Engineer Baldock said the cost to the state would be negligible, and the forest service would co-operate by clearing and repairing the top portion of the road.
