Southwick o( 11(1 Marlon street, who celebrates her 88th birthday today.- She lives alone In one of the houses built by her husband In that block and does all of her own housework. Long active in church and lodge circles, Mrs. Southwick still maintains her affiliation with several clubs. Helen Smith was born in Pine Plains, Duchess county. New York, March 28, 1848. She moved to Wisconsin In early ehUdhood and was reared there. November 24, 1867, she married Frank B. Southwick and In 1874 they came to 8anta Rosa, Calif., to make their home for nine years. They moved to Salem In 1881 and bought property on what is now Marlon street but then was In the country. Mr. 8outhwick was a contractor and erected houses the length of the 1100 block on Marion. He passed away eleven years ago. The reception this afternoon to Forty-First Anniversary Is Celebrated The Rebekaha celebrated the list anniversary of the Institut ing of their lodge Monday night After a 6:30 p. m. dinner the regular session of lodge was held then a short program was given in honor of the fire remaining cnarter members: Mrs. Sarah Hutton. Mrs. Llssie Smith. Mrs Jennie Martin, W. T. Rigdon and J. W. Young. Only the first two named were present. The music was in charge of Miss Eugenia Siegmund. Mrs. Beth Waters on behalf of the degree staff presented Mrs. Hutton with a past noble grand's pin and Mrs, Ora Cosper, past grand secretary of the assembly, presented Mrs. Hutton with a 40 year Jewel from the lodge. Mrs. Grace M. Taylor gave very appropriate paper entitled "Time Marches On," honoring the 25 year members as well. She was assisted in seating; the honor ed guests by the Misses Myrtle Mc- Clay, Helen McElroy, Jean Cla- dek, vera Leabo and Mrs. Velma Raffety, who with little Dorothy Pierce and Jimmy Bill Heseman presented corsages to Mrs. Hutton and Mrs. Smith as well as the grand officers present. At the reception afterwards. Mrs. Jessie Beaty. Mrs. Justina KUdee, Mrs. Bessie Edwards, Mrs. Elsie Townsend, Mrs. Estelle Weed, vice president of the Re- bekah assembly, and Mrs. Lydla Teats, I. G. of the assembly re ceived with Mrs.- Hutton and Mrs. Smith. At the dinner a beautifully dec orated cake baked by one of the lodge members was presented to the two honored guests. John McLain Visits With Salem Friends John McLain of Portland was a house guest of Miss Ella Stwaley and the Smith family at 840 N. Cottage the past week. He left for southern California where he will renew old acquaintances, go ing from there to the middle west and returning to Portland by way of Canada. Mr. McLain Is a former Salem and Euxene resident. Barclay Friday to honor Mrs. William Calder on her birthday. The honored guest was seren aded by John Charge, who played a group of Scotch selections on the bagpipes. Miss Emily Cromley played some, lilting Scotch pieces on the violin. - Miss Margaret Mc Alpine danced the highland fling and the sword dance, and old Scotch songs were . sung by tha group.
