M-ch 26- me state relief commute de cided today, old-age assistance will - be forthcoming In 10 counties April first under Oregon's new so cial security program. Baker,, Columbia, Klamath, Lake, Lang, Lincoln, Union, Wal lowa, Washington and Yamhill counties were . chosen because benefits in those areas previously hare been paid the first of the month and a delay would work a hardship on beneficiaUes, the committee announced. 1 Other counties hare been pay ing on the tenth of the toonth or at the end of each ZQ-ofiy period Start of the program in the re mainder of the state will be rush ed, it was declared. In May, a uni form date of payment will be in- - augurated on the fifth of each month. 1 Checks to the first ten counties will approximate the amount those counties have been paying - . Study Eligibility The committee , said social workers in the various counties will make calls immediately on all persons receiving old-age pay ments from - the counties and that investigation will be made of public relief rolls to ascertain who may be eligible for old-age assist - ance. A uniform property pledge blank was adopted. The committee ruled that taxes will be considered as rent in de termining amounts to be paid and that funeral costs cannot be paid with social security funds. A statement given out by the relief committee showed approxi mately 6500 persons now receiv ing old-age assistance or relief un der county pension plans and said the total probably would be boost ed to 10,000 under the new pro gram. The present relief case load was listed between 12,000 and 13.000 families. January figures showed a total of 13,411, or 39,135 persons, with a relief expenditure of $213,964; In February 12,927 families, or 36,041 persons, with an expendi ture of $209,475. WPA Allots $8128 For County Roads ALBANY, March 26 That a project providing for some $8128 In funds has been made available for the purpose of improving roads in the Scio district was made known today by members ot the Linn county court. In addi tion to this amount the sum of $3235in county road funds will also be available. -":The money will be used In all probability in the improvement of the Rogers Mountain road on which there Is a sharp curve now and which will no doubt be elimin ated. Ditching and clearing the approaches of brush are among other items for which the money will be used. The Albany school board has al so received notice that their appli cation for WPA funds to make further improvements on the Cen tral school athletic field has been granted. This provides for $457 in local funds and S826 in federal money. Dorothv J. Frink Is Called Beyond DAYTON. March 26 Dorothy Jewell Frink. 16, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. V. J. Frink. died at the home of her parents at 6 p. m. Tuesday following pneumo nia after influenza. She was a member of -the junior class of Dayton high school. She was born February 1. 1820, at Corvallis and came with her parents to Dayton in 193,1. She is survived by her parents and two sisters: Georgene and Joan. Burial will be at Corval lis. Dan Fry, state purchasing agent reported Thursday to Governor Martin. Approximately 843 of these ve hicles are operated by the state highway commission. This depart ment has 147 passenger cars, 440 trucks and 140 tractors. The state college operates 115 state-owned vehicles and the Uni versity of Oregon 15 motor ve hicles. Tyson and Mr. and Mrs. W. S. McClain and small son motored to Grass Valley Monday in regard to a refrigeration plant. On their return trip, their car skidded and overturned. With the exception of a few bruises, no one was injured. Considerable dam age was done to the car. Mrs. Lila Jones of Salem has purchased Virginia's beauty shop on Main street, of Mrs. Lincoln Waterman; and opened her shop for business Wednesday morning. Mrs. S. E. Hansen has returned to Caldwell, Idaho again after spending two weeks at her home here. She is staying with her daughter, Mrs. George Feller. Mrs. W. H.
