Nudist Couple Bro ught Here Intent Not Quite Clear; v Pair to Face Mental Tests, .Announced ' Knox Liquor Plan Declared Success Obituary Operation of the Knox liquor control law is attaining temper ance in the state of Oregon, the state liquor control commission declared in its annual report. Consumption of beer and wine increased in 1935 which is an in dication that drinking of hard li quors is on the wane, the report said. Increased sales in 1935 were at tributed to a decline of illicit dealer patronage and not to in creased individual consumption. "The aim of the commission Is to supply the demand for alco holic beverages without encourag ing increased consumption of them." The report Indicated that boot legging has been made unprofit able. Earning of profits were de clared secondary. "Another favorable factor has been the apparent revulsion against law violation which fol lowed the repeal of prohibition," the report continued. Arrests for liquor law violations last year numbered 376. with fines of $24,940. Trouble was confined to less than one per cent of the beer and wine dealers in the state.? Davis In this city. Nudists for the space of an hour lata Tuesday, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Burg; ess were at ths state hospital last night explaining to attendants' why they had doffed their clothes after an accident near Holley and started down the road in Adam and Eve costume: Dr. John Evans, assistant su perintendent of the state hospital, said he would examine tho pair thoroughly today to determine their sanity. The Burgesses were found on a by-road near the Linn county city. They, apparently had been In an auto wreck, accidental or planned, and thought their lives were going to endv ' "We entered the world nude and we want to leave as we came." Mrs Burgess told hospital attend ants. "We thought the world had come to an end.' The Burgesses gave their ad dress as 44S Hyde street, San Francisco. They were en route to Olympia, Wash., apparently to vis It the parents of Mrs. Burgess, Mr. and Mrs. George Tarbell. The Burgesses were seen going down the road by several onlook ers and state police were summon ed. .Temporary clothing was pro vided, the pair was loaded into an auto nd brought here for investigation. Neither Burgess nor his wife could tell the exact location of the wreck. Suicide Idea Doubted Dr. Evans said the woman was not of the suicidal type and the automobile accident probably was accidental and not an attempt to end their lives. Hospital physicians said the woman would be given a complete examination later in the week. "She spoke about organising some kind of a cult". Dr. Evans said, "but I could not interpret what type". Mrs. Burgess denied emphatically that she belonged to a nudist colony. From statements made by the woman it was inferred that she was at one time secretary to a vet erarV bureau near San Francisco Ernest Malone, Linn county farmer, told the officials that he watched Burgess and his wife dis robe from a field in which he was plowing. 4 Coming Events r - llarrh 19- 0-21-3tat high school basketball tour sameat.
