PAGE EIGHT The OREGON STATESMAN, Salem, Oregon, Sunday Morning, February 9, 1936 Salem High to Oppose Eugene Hood River Comes Friday and Rooks Saturday; Team Looks Good Two hard-to-beat high school quints And the flashy Oregon Siata rooks will furnish court opposi tion, for the Salem high Vikings in the three games their sched ule books for this week. Huntington's stalwart young sters will trarel to Eugene Tues day to meet their long time riv als, the Eugene Axemen, and will face the strong Hood "liver team Friday and the Rooks Saturday on the Vikings home court. Steady improvement over the last pair of weeks has raised Vik ing hopes that the Salem team will be ready 10 go to town whn the -state basketball tournament falls due. Coach Huntington's team has thrown off an early sea eon lethargy apparently and in its last games its offensive was de cidedly speeded up. Will Need Speed The Vikings will need all the speed and endurance they can muster, however, in their games this week. Rivalry between Sa lem and Eugene teams has always been strong and the axemen are this year, second only to Corvul lis in the District seven league. Hood River boasts one of the strongest quints in the districi east of the mountains. It has al ready made its position tops in its own district bv downing Pendle ton and The Dalles, the teams it must beat in district play-offs to come to the state tournamentf The Vikinps may attempt' to even matters with the Oregon State Rooks who downed them to 22 in an early season game at Corvallls. Woodburn Downs Silverton, Upset ."WOODBTJRN. Feb. 8. Wood burn took three basketball games last night. The high school A team defeated Silverton high 22 to 20. The Woodburn B team won from the Silverton second team IS to 9. The Woodburn high faculty de feated the Silverton teachers 22 to 13. Woodburn's victory puts Silver ton in second place in the Wil lamette Valley league and West Linn at the top. Woodburn will play West Linn on Friday. In the major high school game, the only score made in the first quarter was one point by Woodburn. At the end of the first half Silverton led 10 to 6. Then the Bulldogs ral lied and changed the lead. ELY PAUL HAUS&K Now that it's getting along mid-Februarish the fans' fancies are fanning toward the state bas ketball tourna-fo ment in March. To come right out with the naked truth, it looks like a lulu. There are good basketball teams scattered all over the state and scattered well enough so that all the good ones won't be elimi nated in the dis trict t o u r n a- ments. Another PwUHanjr thing that helps is that the B teams are bracketed by them selves this year. O Falling back into our evil habit of trying to pick winners we're starting right now on our pre tournament tour of the hoop country to see what's what. Here it is by districts: i District 1 ( Wallowa, Union, I Baker and Malheur) La Grande's been tops in this leneue for some time so we'll take Coach Ira Woodie's team ont of the six A teams in the district. District 2 (Umatilla, Morrow, Gilliam, Grant, Harney and Wheeler) Hood River has beat .n The Dalles, Pendleton and Milton-Freewater decisively and that's all the A schools in that district. We couldn't deduce any thing but Hood River from that, i District 3 (Jefferson, Des chutes, Crook, Lake and Klam ath) Bend and Klamath Falls are the big shots in this cir cuit. Klamath Falls', although it lost heavily by graduation, has twice downed Bend, so we'll string along with the Pelicans. District 4 (Clackamas and Multnomah) With 12 A schools In this district it's always a tough one. Columbia Prep came for the last two years but the Preps have lost Wild Bill O'Donnell. West Linn and Molalla are both strong and Canby is"? also one to con sider. Then there's Oregon City, Milwaukie and G res ham and a few others we can't remember. We'll take a chance on Milwau kie. District 5 (Clatsop and Col umbia) "Usually Astoria's a rinch for this one but St. Hel ens is sitting back on silent haunches waiting for a chance to tumble the Fishermen in the district tournament. We'll ! keep our dough on the Finns, ' though. District 6 (Tillamook, Wash ington, Yamhill, Polk and Mar ion) Tillamook looked awfully good this time last year but we strung along with McMinnville. Tillamook beat McMinnville 43 to 29 Friday and has beaten Silverton, another strong con tender. It looks like it's about time for Rnss Rarey's boys to come back to the tournament af ter two years absence. District 7 (Lincoln, Ben ton, Linn-and Lane) We don't see how anybody can keep Cor vallls ont of there. The Spar tans have been mowing them down In that league. -District 8 (Douglas, Coos nd Curry) Marshfield has. been a steady winner down, in the myr tlewood country. We'll - take the Pirates again this year though as usual Roseburg is close on their heels. - District ft - (Josephine and Jackson)-Looks like Don Fi ber's Ashland Lithians are In again although the three altch es, Hess, Hardy and Hoxie, are gone. Hill Bowerman's Medford i Tigers have been coming right ' along, too. We'll lay it on the line for Ashland. - District 10 (City of Salem) This one's a pushover. Guess who. Districts 11 and 12 (City 1" of Porland ) Picking winners In the Portland Interscholastic league is like that game where blindfolded yon tries to pin a tail on a donkey. Right now it looks like Franklin for sure and Benson or Commerce for maybe. Now watch Franklin get upset right down to the bottom of the list. Districts 13, 14, 15 and 16 (The whole kit and kaboodle) There's only 229 B schools in these fux B districts and we graciously tip our-10-litre Stet son to anybody that can pick the four winners out of that mess. We'll take a chance on Bell fountain for district IB, however, and bet that none of last year's B quints repeat. O If yon haven't learned any thing about the Oregon high school basketball sit nation from the above dissertation you at least have had an opportunity to learn the names of Oregon's counties, which you cannot de ny is educational and Instruc tive. O Sport calendar for this week: Monday, Willamette vs. Albany at Albany; Tuesday, Salem high vs. Eugene at Eugene, . wrestling at the armory, minor league games at Parrish; Wednesday, major division games at Par rish; Thursday, nothing much do ing; Friday, Salem high vs. Hood River, Willamette vs. Whitman at Walla Walla; Saturday, Salem high vs. O. La Belle, ferocious Frenchman who has raised the ire of fans in his previous appearances here, is expecting to tear Elliott, referee ing cleanie to small bits in their encounter. Schooled in the maim ing tactics of the French-Canadian lumbermen La Belle is a dangerous opponent in the ring or In the woods. Elliott, who downed the Syrian bad man, Dick Costello, in last week's engagement, has no qualms In meeting the Canadian killer, however, and promises thai his smooth matwork will be suf ficient to tame the fiery French man. .
