Futures Drop; Weather Good Snow Held Beneficial For 1936 Crop; Close of Market Is Uneven ; . CHICAGO, Jan . 17-CP)-E3tI-matea pointing to big export 'pur chaser n Canada totaling 2,750, 000 bushels- the past 24 hours helped gire a firmer tone to wheat Taluei today.. Bullish significance was attach ed to the fact that Winnipeg and Minneapolis led upturns of prices. Canadian country marketings are now running far less than is be ing disposed of abroad. , Wheat closed uneven, off to up compared to yesterday's finish,. May 1.00, corn un changed to Vt advance. May 60 M, oats unchanged to higher, and provisions varying from 10 cents setback to 5 cents gain. New crop wheat futures, July and September, were inclined to lag as compared with May. A rea son given was beneficial snows throughout most of the domestic winter crop belt, with more snow predicted. Corn and oats- were re sponsive to smallness of rural off erings of corn. Provisions mostly were higher with hogs. Changes Are Few, Portland Market PORTLAND, Jan. 17. - () -There was no change in butter, butterfat or egg quotations. There was no suggestion of price changes in the chicken mar ket. Price on calves was down frac tionally. Weaker prices and occasional further shading of values were suggested in the market for hot house rhubarb. Sales and demand for hothoust mushrooms were Increasing. Onion trading was fully steady at the south at 1.15 net gener ally to growers. Cauliflower market was con gested. Cabbage was held firm wlib good local stock getting scarce. Most Grades of Wool in Demand BOSTON, Jan. 17-(;P)-(U. S. Dept. Agr.) Most all grades of territory wools received some call Trith the bulk of th esales on 64s and finer. Average to good French combing staple T! 4s and finer ter ritory wools in original bags brought 85-86 cents scoured bas is, while original lots of limilar grade running bulk good French combing and strictly combing sold at around 87 cents. Average to short French combing moved at 83-85 cents scoured basis. Sales of the lower grades of territory wools were mostly small, but prices held very firm. Club Organized EVENS VALLEY, Jan. 17. Approval Denied To Directory Ads Report has been made to the Business Men's league that a man is working the city securing ad vertisements; for a directory of various clubs meeting at the Sa lem Woman's club building. Tfc,e league, in answer to in quiry, states that no endorsement has been given for any such ad vertising, and that in fact the league haB consistently been op posed to Such directory advertis ing on grounds that ads of such nature are of no value to mer chants. CRIPPLED NIECE'S OPERATION i vr'f. rV. -sBBsaasaaana rv Malioney Explains Pre-Dated Letter : PORTLAND, Ore Jan. -The Oregonian received a com municaiion from Mayor Willis Ma honey of Klamath Falls last night In which Mahoney admitted writ ing a pre-dated letter relative to Townsend plan but denied any motive other than saving the reci pient,' Russell Hogan from "em barrassment." - Mahoney, the Oregonian said, declared "his stand concerning the Townsend pension plan, to which the letter referred, was on file in radio stations in 1934 and that he had actively supported the old age pension plan for 16 months. Hogan yesterday exhibited a letter which he said he received "trom Mahoney in 1935, accom panied by a request, assertedly made by Mahoney, that the enve lope bearing a September, 1935, postmark be destroyed. The let ter was dated In October,- 1934. Hogan questioned Mahoney's sin cerity in regard to the Townsend plan and said Mahoney asked him to soil the letter to make it look old. Mahoney today told the Ore gonian he sent Hogan the pre dated letter because the latter, one of Mahoney's aids in the Klamath Falls mayor's unsuccess ful race for the democratic nomi nation as governor in 1934, asked for such ia letter 'after he (Ho gan) had told his constituents he already received one. Over 100,000 in WPA Wages Paid This week's WPA payroll sent the aggregate of project wages paid in Marion county to date past the $100,000 mark, it was announced at the district WPA finance office yesterday.
