on a curve and overturned in a
ditch. Koser, he said, spoke a few

suffered minor injuries, and Ko

Young Koser was the holder 61
a Boy Scout certificate of heroism
for saving Carl Bartz from drown
ing in the Dallas swimming pool
in 19 29. He received the award
at a court of honor at which Judge
O. P. Coshow, then of the state
supreme court, presided..
Koser was born at Rickreall Oc
tober 30. 1912. He was a grad
uate of Dallas high school, class
of 1931, and attended one year at
Oregon State college. An avia
tion enthusiast, he had taken fly
ing lessons at the Salem airport
and last Tuesday had purchased
an airplane of his own.
Surviving are the mother, Mrs.
F. A. Koser; an aunt, Mrs. Marty
McKee of Perrydale, and an un
cle, John KoserL of Amity.
Direct Relief To
Be Much Reduced

lief moneys have come from a
balance Saved by the state relief
committee, before the federal gov
ernment cut off its funds.
Hewlett said the "master"
WPA project of road construc
tion on three large districts in
the county, was employing hun
dreds of men in the county. Trans
portation and tools are being fur
nished "by the county. WPA pays
all the payrolls with the exception
of the salaries of afew foremen.
Next month the county also
faces the problem of providing
for old-age dependents here. It
has a small residue from Its 1935
appropriation for old-age pensions
which can probably be used for
the pension checks next week
since these are December , pay
ments.' All the appropiratlon in
the 1936 budget for the county,
set up for old-age pensions, was
diverted by the special session of
the legislature to relief purposes.
Pensions have been totalling
14500 a month here.

In Highway Crash
Two women were brought to
Salem Deaconess hospital short
ly before 1 o'clock this morning
for treatment of lacerations they
received in an automobile acci
dent on the -Pacific highway a
short distance north of Salem,
One, a Mrs. Stewart, suffered se
vere lacerations about the face.
Condition of the other, a Mrs.
Cox, was not believed to t seri
ous. William George, Eugene, re
ported to police he had stopped
his car at the side of the road
to recover a hat that had blown
out of It when his machine was
struck from the rear by the auto
in which the two women were
riding. Names of two men. thought
to have been In the latter car
were not obtained. The car bore
a Kansas license.

-The death fill of a fire which
early today destroyed the officers'
quarters at a -civilian conservation
corps camp 'here rose to four to
night when Lieut. Charles 11.
Brooks of Northfield succumbed
to Burns.
The fire was thought to have
been caused ',. by an overheated
stove or an explosion of coal gas.
The other officers who died in
the fire were Capt. Roland D. Pot
ter of Northfield. Capt. Edwin W.
Boothby, 37, of Watertown, Mass.,
and Lieut. Leonard B. Busbey,
