Intramural League Eight Teams But After Playoff An eight team intramural bas ketball league for Salem schools was formed at a meeting of coach es and team representatives at the senior high last night. Seven teams were named to take part in the league and an eighth team will be named after a playoff for the position between the Salem high Midgets and the Sakuras, a Japanese student team, sometime next week. The seven teams are Future Farmers. Future Craftsmen, Auto Mechanics. Parrish junior high, Leslie junior high, Sacred Heart academy and the Oregon state school for the deaf. Sacred Heart and the school for the deaf, each of which has strong teams, were invited to enter the league to add Hubbard and Woodburn Will Clash Tonight on Former's Maple Court HUBBARD. A Whitman club that lacked coordination, showing early sea son rustiness, could not hit its stride throughout the first half and the invaders led 24 to 12 at the middle mark. Back at Boston, this time with the task of rebuilding the down trodden Braves, Quinn pulled a deal with his old Dodger confed erates sending outfielder, Randy Moore, and pitcher, Ed "Dutch" Brandt to Brooklyn in exchange for catcher, Al Lopez; second baseman, Tony Cuccinello, and pitchers. Ray Benge and Bob Reis. Baseball men were unanimous that Quinn had made the finest straight deal of the lively three day meeting that closed today. Ten Clubs Barter As the meeting closed, 10 of the 16 major league clubs had re ported one or more deals. The ones who failed to turn one were Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cincin nati and Chicago in the National; St. Louis and Washington in the American. The Boston Red Sox announced the largest with the purchase of Jimmie Foxx and John Marcum from the Athletics for players and eash. It's about time to eat the sqnad down to the size it will be all season but "Spec" can't figure out which players shall turn In their suits. They all rank about equal in ability. AH in II he luis four teams and it just de pends on the position of the stars or something which one looks the best from day to day. O There is one five composed en tirely of freshmen, a hard-playing lot, that gives the veterans a lot of tough work. There is another made up mostly of members of last year's rook squad that also works smoothly. There's another squad of juniors and seniors, the veterans, that at times has it over the youngsters and at other times is made to look sick. The last five is composed of the stragglers but is surprising in its effectiveness. ".Spec" is hoping that he will be able to keep his lanky fresh men five playing together throughout their college ca reers. If those five, Kelly and Gastineau, forwards; Anton, center, and Weaver and Specht, guards, are kept together they'll be a sweet combination next year and even better the follow ing two years. The basketball teams that become sensations are the ones on which ' every player knows almost intuitively what his team-mates will do in every situation. , o The Northwest conference will meet today and tomorrow in Port land. Happily it appears that this year's conference meet will not be marred with the eligibility squab bles that have appeared year after year. In fact we think the past football season sets a record. There was not a single protest while for the four previous years there were charges brought dur ing every season. Cardinals to Buy Sacramento Club ST. LOUIS, Dec. 12-)-Branch Rickey said tonight the St. Louis Cardinals have virtually complet ed negotiations to take over the Sacramento team of the Pacific Coast league. j Rickey, general manager and vice-president of the Cards, said a representative of the club would be sent to Sacramento next week to complete the deal. Taking over the club would give the Cardinals' far - flung "farm" system its first represent ative on the Pacific coast. Dwight Adams' Dallas high cageri have been working overtime this week in preparation for the opening of the Willamette Valley league schedule. Adams has but one letterman returning this year so has been forced' to develop a whole new team. Bob Woodman, one - year veteran at guard, and Kenneth McCubbins, center, are the only players who have seen "A" squad experience. Walt Joslin, Irvin Voth, Merle Plummer and Marlin Burlebach are outstanding recruits from last year's "B" squad who are slated to see lots of action.
