Taxpayer Interest Is Low in Passing Budget For School on Island GRAND ISLAND, Nov. 27 On ly a small percentage of taxpayers were present to vote the passing of the Bchool budget for the ensu ing year at the- special school meeting held at the school house Monday night. A family dinner was enjoyed Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Worth Wiley and family when the former's uncle, Clarence Badger, and four sisters, were at a table together for the first time in nine years. Mc Arthur, accompanied by Mrs. Me Arthur And their dane-hter TVtrla attended the celebration of the 94th birthday of his father, Da vid -McArthur, of New Era, Sun day. Waldo F. Brown, a grand son of the aged man, together with Mrs. Brown and sons, Boyd and Wallace, were also in attend ance. McArthur, who is still hale and hearty, was born in Scotland,- but came to America as a child. He has been for many years an ac tive member of the G. A. R. and the grnage. McArthur and his wife, who is two years his Jun ior, have been married 70 years. - Nine children were born to the couple, seven of whom are liv ing. They, have lived in Oregon since 1872. Canadian Treaty to Cut Down Construction Now, Hurt Price Says Hawley COTTAGE GROVE, Ore., Nov. 27-iffy-W. C. Hawley of Salem, former United States representa tive from Oregon, told friends here he believed the new Cana dian trade treaty would have its' effect in "curtailing building and breaking the price on all north west fir products." Hawley said lumber purchases would show an immediate slump in anticipation of lower prices. He also said: 22.25 a thousand feet (which he declared would be the reduction in price of lumber com ing across the Canadian border) "will wipe out what little profit, if any, has been coming to coast operators." This was the largest crowd to attend a card party here this season, with Woodburn, Mt. Angel, St. Paul and West Woodburn being repre sented.
