Gladiolus Thrips
Remedy Is Given
Naptbalene Flakes Held
Best Treatment For
Diseased Bulbs
j The state department of agri
culture has issued the following
instructions to gladiolus growers
for treatment of bulbs for gladi
olus thrips:
(1) Napthalene flakes. This
remedy is cheap and effective and
is! safe both to user and the corns.
The flakes Bhould be used at the
rate of one ounce (four level
tablespoonfuls) for every 100
cornxs, or one pound to 2,000
corms.
I Small lots of bulbs mey Je
placed in paper bags or cartons.
Sprinkle the lakes over the
corms, close the top of the con
tainer so as to retain the fumes.
F6r large lots place the corms in
trays, scatter the flakes over
them, stack trays and cover with
a j canvas or paper. Do not put
edrms in tin cans or other air
tight! containers as the corms are
likely to "sweat" and sprout. Be
fore applying the treatment allow
the conn to cure sufficiently so
that j they may be thoroughly
cleaned. Burn all tops and trash.
j The length of time for this
treatment is not less than four
wjeefcs, preferably eight weeks.
The corms mey be allowd to r
main in the flakes all winter pro
vided the flakes are shaken out
one month before planting time
and the corms allowed to air out.
