In a. very small way, of course. I am not mentioning tne faCt boastfully. During ur little talk Mr. Lytle mentioned that he had come to Oregon from Sheridan, Wyo. This gave me -quite a start, because for 25 years I have wanted to meet np with somebody from Sheridan, Wyo., and it had finally happened. Mister" Remembered Tears ago I knew in the mid dle west a banker? whose name was E. A. Whitney; I. remember Mr. Whitney very agreeably. He was the first man, and th only one for quite some years, who called me ,'nliste.' When he de parted from that mi 4 western town he went into banking at Sheridan, which he evidently thought had a future. Things worked out pretty well with him, I think, because after (a while he went to Los Angeles. He did not go into business again He lived in Los Angeles, taking an occasional trip to Europe, dur ing the remainder; of his life. When he died his remains were cremated' in accordance with , the terms of nig will and hfs ashes were taken, to Lake Geneva In Swltserlaad and scattered over the waters. It was brought o-f at the meet ing that federal agencies, coun ties, cities and contractors operat ing under the state highway com mission, were exempted from pay mentg of royalty. Land depart ment officials said these exemp tions had reduced the annnal rev enue from this source to 310,000. It originally exceeded 340,000, they said. Sanderson Reed of Portland was employed to investigate the sand and gravel operations. School Funds Lost The resolution to eliminate ex emptions was introduced by State Treasurer Holman. He said the state was now losing a large amount of money annually while the Irreducible school fund had suffered the loss of a correspond ing amount Holman declared that receipts for the support ot the public schools had been reduced 32,368,- 000 since 1930, while the amount of salaries paid to teachers had been decreased 31,903,000. Some teachers, he said, had taken a sal ary reduction of more 'than 60 per cent.. The order . of the land board will cost the state highway eom mission approximately $8000 an nnally, it was estimated.
